Aug. 25, 1997 Florida State Releases 1997-98 Men's Basketball ScheduleTALLAHASSEE, Fl. -- An appearance in the Preseason National Invitational Tournament, a home game with defending national champion Arizona and the 16-game Atlantic Coast Conference slate highlight the 1997-98 Florida State men's basketball schedule, released today. "We are looking forward to an exciting first year," said Seminole Head Coach Steve Robinson, who was named to his post on July 1 after spending the last two seasons at Tulsa. "The schedule will certainly be challenging. Playing NCAA Tournament-caliber teams early in the season will help us prepare for the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule." Florida State opens the season on November 14 at Rice. The Seminoles return to Tallahassee for their home-opener on November 17 against Loyola-Maryland in the first round of the Preseason NIT. With a win, FSU could play 1997 Final Four participant Minnesota in the second round. Other schools in the Preseason NIT field include: Connecticut, UNLV, Arizona State and 1997 NCAA Tournament teams Boston University, Cincinnati, Kansas and Rhode Island. The highlight of Florida State's non-conference schedule is a December 23 home game against defending national champion Arizona. The Seminoles will also play rival Florida in Orlando in the Milk Challenge on December 14 and travel to DePaul, coached by former FSU head coach Pat Kennedy, on December 31. Florida State opens its ACC schedule on December 20 against North Carolina. The Seminoles begin conference road play on January 3 at NC State. The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament is set for March 5-8 in Greensboro, NC. The Seminoles will have at least 21 games televised and could appear on TV as many as 24 times. Florida State's ACC opener versus North Carolina will be broadcast by CBS. ESPN and ESPN 2 will carry at least five games and as many as eight.
