Mar 7, 1997 Duncan, Deacons Bounce FSU in ACC QuarterfinalsTim Duncan scored 13 of his 31 points from the foul line as eighth-ranked Wake Forest edged Florida State, 66-65, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Greensboro, North Carolina. Ricky Peral added nine points for the Demon Deacons (23-5), who will face North Carolina in Saturday's semifinals. Wake Forest and the Tar Heels were the only higher-seeded teams to advance in the quarterfinal round. "Obviously, we were one point better and about five-tenths of a second better and that's about it," said Wake Forest coach Dave Odom. "We had a chance, we felt, to take control of the game on several occasions when the lead got to double figures and each time we went into a bit of a drought." James Collins scored 22 points and Randell Jackson added 13 for Florida State (16-11), which lost any chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles defeated Wake Forest, 59-55, in the final regular-season game for both schools. The Demon Deacons led comfortably for most of the second half and still held a 60-48 lead with 4:50 to play after a jumper by Steven Goolsby. But Florida State used an 11-3 run to close within 63-59 after a three-pointer by Collins with 1:51 remaining. After a miss by Tony Rutland, the Seminoles had a chance to draw closer, but Collins and Geoff Brower missed three-pointers. Goolsby missed another shot for the Deacons, but Greer did, too. Joseph Amonett made two free throws with 15 seconds left before Jackson hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit in half, 65-62. Duncan sank one of two free trows with seven seconds left before Collins closed the scoring with a three-pointer in the final second. "We finally hit some free throws down the stretch," Odom said. "Not as many as we liked, but we did hit some -- enough to win the basketball game." A dunk by Collins lifted Florida State into a 12-12 tie, but the Deacons went on an 8-0 run as Duncan hit a jumper, Sean Allen sank two free throws and Peral knocked down a three-pointer before Duncan added a free throw at the 11:13 mark to make it 20-12. The Seminoles closed within 35-31 less than a minute into the second half, but Duncan fueled an 8-0 burst with six points. Rutland's eight-footer gave Wake Forest a 43-31 lead with 16:42 to play. Duncan, who hit 13-of-23 free throws, made and attempted more foul shots than Florida State, which was 10-of-15 from the line. Wake Forest shot 47 percent (20-of-43) from the field and 4-of-21 from three-point range. The Seminoles hit 39 percent (22-of-56) of their shots from the field and stayed close by going 11-of-25 from three-point range. Collins hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. "We did a nice job on the perimeter and didn't get double figures from their other post position, so it was just Timmy (Duncan)," said Florida State coach Pat Kennedy. "Shot-making was our biggest problem. If we knocked down a few more shots in the first half, we would have been in better shape." FLORIDA ST (65)
