FSU's Vicky Gill Places Fifth At Great American Cross Country Festival

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Florida State men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Great American Cross Country Festival Friday night, placing 12th and 13th, respectively. The annual prestigious meet was held at the Ballantyne Cross Country course located at the Ballantyne Resort, just outside Charlotte, N.C. Senior Vicky Gill led the women with a fifth place finish, running the 5k-course in an impressive 18:17. Gill was one of 174 competitors in the women's collegiate field and one of three Atlantic Coast Conference runners to place in the top five.

Placing second for the Lady Seminoles was sophomore Anne Clinton at 19:49.9, 67th overall. Rounding out the top five for the FSU women was sophomore Natalie Hughes (71st, 19:54), senior Misty Harper (83rd, 20:01.7) and freshman Jenny Gomez (116th, 20:40.5).
 

 

Sophomore Joep Tigchelaar turned in the top finish for the men, running the 8k-course in 27:48.3, good enough for 57th place. Junior Maarten van den Heuvel in 61st place at 27:50.9 followed Tigchelaar for the Seminoles. Senior Dave Guerra (28:01.1) and freshman Kevin Cook (28:01.4) finished back-to-back at 69th and 70th, respectively. Senior Nate Adams rounded out the scorers for the men with a 80th-place finish at 28:09.1.

In an additional note for the Seminoles, both the men and women defeated rival University of Florida. The cross country squads joined the Seminole women's soccer team in a Friday night sweep of the Gators. The men's cross country team defeated UF (15th) 329-408, while the Lady Seminoles scored 341 points to the Gators' (23rd) 602. The Seminole soccer team defeated UF by a score of 2-1 in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Seminoles will return to the trails on Oct. 5, when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete at the Florida Invitational.
