TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  (Seminoles.com) – The Florida State indoor volleyball team played another successful spring season under seventh-year head coach Chris Poole. Despite the departure of key seniors Ashley Neff and Olivera Medic, the Seminoles went undefeated the in spring season.

The Seminoles defeated LSU, South Carolina, Jacksonville and Florida in their offseason matches.

“All of these girls had a great spring by not dropping a single match and they have all improved,” Poole said.   “Our two rising seniors, Sarah Wickstrom and Katie Mosher were great leaders for our program last fall and I know they are both hungry to again lead this team.  Both have been instrumental for us since they were freshman helping our team into the Final Four.”

During these matches, former Seminole Elise Walch trained through the season with the team and filled in the holes as a right-side hitter while Milica Kubura and Mereceds Vaughn were added in January. Kubura debuted as an outside hitter, however Vaughn is not allowed to compete until fall.

“Mercedes was new to the program this spring and is clearly one of the best athletes in the nation,” Poole said.   “She has such a huge upside with her potential and we are looking forward to seeing her in a real match.

“Mili joined us this spring from Serbia and has made an impact with her volleyball experience,” Poole said  “We are working to catch Mili up to the physical part of the college game, but she has already made great strides and we believe she has a lot of potential.”

In the match against the Gators, Kubura began to find her stride, posting 16 kills while hitting .609 percent. The Seminoles won four-of-five sets against the Gators (29-27, 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23).

Six members of the team participated in the U.S. National Team tryouts at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The event welcomed 248 athletes and ran from Feb.21-23.

Following the tryout, Nicole Walch was selected to represent the top U.S. Collegiate National Team that will compete on the China tour this summer (June 17-27).

“Nicole had a great sophomore season leading our team in kills and is expected to carry a heavier load with her experience,” Poole said. “She will be getting such a great opportunity in China this summer playing for the top group of collegiate players in the USA.”

Along with Walch, Mosher, Vaughn and Wickstrom were chosen to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team Program in Minneapolis, Minn. (June 22-July 1).

Mara Green was selected for the program as an alternate.

“Mara Green trained through her first full semester after being plagued by injuries the last two years,” Poole said. “She made huge strides this year and the key is going to be keeping her healthy and on the court.  It says a lot that she was picked as an alternate with only 8 players picked nationally for the collegiate roster.”

On top of the four ladies selected to the national teams, Poole also had encouraging things to say about other members of his team.

“Other returning players from this spring have also made great strides,” Poole said. “Sarah Burrington, has continued to improve her overall game.  We expect Sarah to continue getting better and better each training cycle.  Hailey Luke had really improved her consistency and overall level this spring.  She has combined indoor and sand training and has improved in all parts of her game.  Caroline and Laura Dadowski have worked hard to improve their defense and consistency in serve receive and both have continued to be great servers.”

Wickstrom, Luke, Vaughn, Kubura and Aurora Davis have continued their volleyball season with FSU’s sand team, who is preparing for the AVCA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. which are held from May 2-4.
