Florida State Volleyball Plays Host To Spring Scrimmage Saturday

March 21, 2007

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With three weeks of spring practice nearly complete, the Florida State volleyball team will hold its spring scrimmage on Saturday (March 24) on Lucy McDaniel Court at Tully Gymnasium. Admission is free and the action starts at 10 a.m.

"This is a good opportunity for us to assess where our team is at and what we need to work on," FSU head coach Todd Kress said. "You can't fully evaluate your team in the spring because you're missing your incoming players, but you can see how far the returners have progressed, particularly the freshmen, and what you can build on. The spring is when we see the biggest growth from the freshmen so this scrimmage and the ACC/SEC Challenge will tell us a lot about what kind of players they are going to be."

Leading the Seminoles this spring is 2006 AVCA All-American Makini Thompson (Quincy, Mass.) The junior outside hitter also collected AVCA First-Team All-East Region accolades as well as First-Team All-ACC honors. One of those freshmen that are looking to make a big leap is middle blocker Brianna Barry (Winter Springs, Fla.), who earned ACC All-Freshman Team accolades. Bolstering the Seminoles defense will be defensive specialist Ashlee Moon (Murrieta, Calif.) who joined the Seminoles for the spring semester after leading Orange Coast College to its second state title.

Following this weekend's scrimmage, Florida State will round out the spring season at the ACC/SEC Challenge, hosted by Georgia Tech, in Atlanta on April 7. The Seminoles will take on Tennessee, Mississippi, Auburn and Alabama.
