Florida State Falls to No. 3 Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- It was collegiate volleyball at its finest as the Florida State Lady Seminoles played host to the No. 3 Florida Gators in front of a record 2,782 fans at Tully Gymnasium this evening. Florida improved to 12-1 and handed the Lady Seminoles their first loss of the season (12-1) taking the hard-fought three-set contest by scores of 15-11, 15-11 and 15-10 in a match that took nearly two hours.

Despite the three-set victory, the Gators had their hands full with Florida State. With the score tied at 9-9 in game one, UF outscored FSU 6-2 for the victory. FSU junior LaToya Presberry's three aces in game two helped lead the Lady Seminoles to a dominating 11-4 advantage in game two, but it was two services aces that started the Gator rally as UF scored the last 11 points to take game two. Florida took a quick 6-1 lead in game three, but FSU came back to tie and stayed with the Gators for most of the game before falling 15-10.

Junior Holly Schneider's 14 kills and .344 hitting percentage led the Lady Seminoles while Presberry recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Despite the power of the Gator hitters, FSU outblocked UF 12-7.

"Florida has a lot of weapons on their team," Presberry said. "You always expect a great challenge from them, but we did a lot of good things out there and we proved that we can play with teams that are ranked at that level."

Florida was led by Nina Foster's .519 hitting percentage on 18 kills, four errors and 27 attempts.

Florida State will open Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend with a 7 p.m. match at North Carolina on Friday and a 6:30 p.m. match against NC State on Saturday.
