Aug. 30, 1997 Lady Seminoles Take Title In FSU Volleyball ClassicTALLAHASSEE, FL -- The Lady Seminole volleyball team swept Mississippi State and Purdue in three games each to win the championship of the FSU Classic at Tully Gym. Florida State, now 3-0, defeated the Bulldogs 15-5, 15-12, 15-8 in the Saturday's opening match and beat the Boilermakers 15-13, 15-7, 15-4 Saturday night to earn the title. Junior middle hitter Susan Hawks was named the FSU Classic MVP following her dominating performance at the net for the Lady Seminoles. Hawks totaled 19 kills and 21 blocks during the tournament. Fellow juniors LaToya Presberry and Fiona Bolten were also selected to the all-tournament team. "I couldn't be more thrilled with our performance this weekend," said head coach Cecile Reynaud. "Our blocking was tremendous. It is something we have been working on very much." Florida State tallied 33 total team blocks while its three opponents mustered just six. Susan Johnson, Presberry, Holly Schneider and Aisha Thornton each blasted double-digit kills in Florida State's sweep of Mississippi State. Johnson and MVP Hawks took over for the Lady Seminoles at the net with six block assists each. Against Purdue in the nightcap, Presberry led Florida State with 11 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. Hawks was once again a force at the net with eight kills and eight block assists. Florida State will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to face Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Montana next weekend before returning home to face Georgia Southern on Wednesday, September 10th.
