Florida State Volleyball Cruises Past Virginia
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Lady Seminole volleyball team rebounded from its Friday night loss with a 15-0, 15-6, 15-6 rout of Virginia this afternoon. With the victory, Florida State improved to 22-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The Cavaliers dropped to 16-15, 4-10 in the ACC.
Florida State opened up strong taking the first 20 points of the match including a 15-0 shutout in game one. The Lady Seminoles were error-free on offense in the first game hitting .750 on 15 kills in 20 attempts. Freshman Jennifer Werrick was a perfect 7 for 7 on the attack while Virginia mustered just 3 digs on defense in the game.
After FSU rolled out to a 5-0 lead in game two, Virginia finally broke through with a pair of service aces. The Lady Seminoles then turned to the block totaling 7 blocks, 5 from Aisha Thornton, in the second game alone enroute to a 15-6 win. The Tribe finished off the Cavaliers in the final game 15-6 for the 3-0 sweep.
"This match was very important in terms of the ACC Tournament. The seedings are very close right now," said head coach Cecile Reynaud. "After last night's tough match, I'm glad we were able to bounce back. It was very impressive."
The Lady Seminoles ended the match with a .430 hitting percentage on 49 kills and just 9 errors in 93 attempts while Virginia could only break even at .000 (20 k, 20 e, 103 att). Middle hitters Thornton and Susan Hawks each hit over .600 for Florida State. Jennifer Werrick (13 kills, 14 digs) and Holly Schneider (11 kills, 11 digs) each tallied double-doubles in the victory.
Florida State will close out its regular season schedule with conference matches at Wake Forest and Duke next weekend.
