Volleyball Finishes Regular Season Second in the ACC
DURHAM, N.C. - Double-doubles from Fiona Bolten, Susan Hawks, Holly Schneider, and Jennifer Werrick and a career-high blocking performance from Aisha Thornton propelled the Lady Seminole volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Duke and a second place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 13-15, 15-7, 15-7, 14-16, 15-10 triumph was the first Florida State win over the Blue Devils since joining the ACC. The victory also gave FSU, picked 5th in the ACC in the preseason, a 11-5 conference record and the number two seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. The Lady Seminoles finished the regular season at 24-7 overall. Duke fell to 15-15, 9-7 in the conference.
"With so much at stake, this was a real pressure win. This could be one of the most memorable wins of my coaching career," said head coach Cecile Reynaud. "It was a very emotional match and everyone came through for us."
Junior middle hitter Susan Hawks led the Florida State offense with a career-high 21 kills in addition to a 10-dig performance on defense. Schneider added 19 kills and 16 digs, Werrick tallied 14 kills and a career-best 18 digs, and Bolten totaled 64 assists and 14 digs for the Lady Seminoles. Kate Hemlepp and Aisha Thornton also registered double-digit kill totals. At the net, Thornton posted a career-high 8 of FSU's 18 block assists.
Second-seeded Florida State will meet seventh-seeded Virginia in the opening round of the ACC Tournment in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
