TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State University women's tennis program has announced the signing of two athletes this week. Leyla Erkan who hails from Hilton Head, S.C and Kerrie Cartwright of Nassau, Bahamas have both inked their National Letter of Intents and will begin their career with the Seminoles starting in the 2011 fall season.
"We are very excited about our two new additions for 2011," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "Both Kerrie and Leyla have extensive playing backgrounds. They play a lot of ITF tournaments and international events around the world, and have experienced a lot of good exposure. We look to both of them to contribute immediately when they come to campus next fall and we expect that they will fit in well with the team and continue to keep us on the path of success that we've been on these last couple of years. We are very excited about their addition."
One thing that has the Florida State coaches excited is Erkan and Cartwright's strong desire to become Seminoles.
"We are really excited about it, and they are both as excited to be Seminoles as well," added Hyde. "When going through the recruiting process when you know that the commitments that you get are as excited as you are, and voice that, it really fires both sides up and we are really looking forward to them joining us next fall."
Although the Seminoles finished last season ranked among the top 15 teams in the country, and will return five players in 2011, Coach Hyde still believes these two recruits will be able to make an immediate impact.
"We expect them both to step in and have an immediate impact on the team and due to their extensive playing backgrounds we feel like they are going to be a really perfect fit for the direction this program is headed," said Hyde.
