ORLANDO, Fla. - The Florida State women's tennis team took to the courts on a cool, cloudy day at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, site of the USTA Clay Court Invitational. It was a full day of both singles and doubles competition for the Seminoles.

"Today was a very good and long day of college tennis matches," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "We are continuing to see many improvements on our team this fall, and today was no exception."

Mia Vriens played on the stadium court and won her round of 64 match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, over UNM's Emily Oliver. Vriens then withdrew from her next match due to injury. No. 2 singles seed Daneika Borthwick defeated her round of 32 opponent, Paula Deheza of Texas A&M, by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

"Daneika did a great job of managing her singles match and really gave her opponent no room to breathe," Hyde said. "I was also happy with Mia's match this morning. She continues to get stronger on court and makes the game look a lot easier than it is."

Laurence Porry had an impressive three-set victory to open her day, knocking Natasha Smith of New Mexico down to the consolation draw by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Porry took a solid lead by winning the first set of match number two, but was unable to hold off Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

"Laurence played two very good matches today, and came up short in her second match in a hard-fought three-set battle," added Hyde. "She is really starting to find her stride this fall, and you can see her confidence grow each time she steps on court."

Kerrie Cartwright ran into a tough USTA junior opponent in the opening round and lost 6-1, 6-3. Duda dos Santos posted an early lead but fell in a three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to UCF's Caroline Eberhart. Kristina Schleich narrowly lost the first set of her match 4-6, and took the second set 7-5 before retiring at 4-1 in the third. Majlena Pedersen split the first two sets with Lizette Blankers of New Mexico, but the hard-fought third set went to her opponent, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4.

On the doubles side, Porry and dos Santos looked great in their 8-5 victory over UCF's pairing of Griffith and Cesarini, while Schleich and Pedersen conceded their match to Tulsa's Saarteinen and Kuricova due to injury.

Friday brings three singles consolation draw matches with dos Santos against Beatriz Santos of Texas Tech at 9:30 a.m., Cartwright versus New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova at 10 a.m. and Pedersen taking on a USTA junior player at 10:30 a.m. Borthwick continues in the singles main draw versus Florida's Stefani Stojic at 9:30 a.m.

Doubles action will get underway with two matches at 2:30 p.m. Borthwick will join with Cartwright for their first doubles match of the weekend, taking on UNM's Bezdickova and Blankers, while Porry and dos Santos will face Nemchen and Cichon of Tulsa.

"We have another very full day ahead of us tomorrow, and the quality of matches will continue to get better as the weekend progresses," said Hyde.

Results will be updated throughout the weekend on Seminoles.com. For more on FSU women's tennis, check us out on Facebook (facebook.com/FSU.WTennis) and Twitter (@FSU_WTennis).
