For 22 years now, the golden torch gala has been one of few events nationwide which solely recognizes the success of student athletes' off the playing fields.    The student-athletes recognized at the event bring distinction and honor to The Florida State University by continuing to reinforce FSU's position as a superior academic and athletic institution. 

The Golden Torch winners are our school's most visible ambassadors and they work hard to promote the best interest of the The Florida State University.  Their academic achievements are a tribute to the many individuals and groups on campus who support the mission of the athletics department throughout the year.  

CRAIG DUNLAP AWARD

The Clint Dunlap Scholarship Award is presented by Lt. Craig Dunlap in honor of his son.  The award goes to a junior or senior who displays outstanding academic achievement and the highest level of integrity.  The winner comes from Business/Economics/Finance or a legal major with an interest in investment banking. 

This year's Clint Dunlap winner is Victoria Richmond  from the swimming and diving team. 

The Golden Torch winners will be student-athletes who achieved the highest grade point average on their respective teams for the 2011-12 academic year and some of those have embarked on professional careers or are continuing their education.

BASEBALL

MALCOLM GAGE SMITH

Florida State reliever Gage Smith was the anchor of the Seminole bullpen and played a major role in leading Florida State to the College World Series and a top four finish a season ago.  The Tallahassee, Fla., native posted a 5-0 record with three saves and a 2.89 ERA as he led the team with 39 appearances last year.  The junior right hander majoring in marketing is a two-time member of FSU's President's List and Dean's List, while earning a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team in 2012.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

OLIVIA BRESNAHAN

Florida State junior guard Olivia Bresnahan is a Sport Management major who appeared in 60 games for the Seminoles over the past two seasons and scored 133 points, dished 86 assists and grabbed 122 rebounds. Last season she was a valuable and versatile guard for the Noles, averaging over 20 minutes a game and logging time on the wing and at the point guard position.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Luke Loucks

Florida State's starting point guard Luke Loucks played in 136 games as a Seminole - the most by anyone in FSU basketball  history as is the 95 wins he played in.  Luke played in four straight NCAA Tournaments and, of course, gave all Seminoles a thrill as a member of the 2012 ACC Basketball Championship team!  Luke and his teammates will be forever remembered in FSU's history books for their accomplishments including four top four finishes in the ACC.  Now he adds the Golden Torch to his trophy case.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Colleen Quigley

Colleen Quigley was an integral member of the FSU women's cross country team which spent five weeks at No. 1 in the national standings and placed fourth at the NCAA Championship last year.  She earned All-ACC, All-ACC Academic and ACC Rookie of the Year honors after placing sixth at the ACC Championship meet.  She followed up by being the top freshman at the NCAA South Region meet with a 13th place finish earning All-South Region honors. She went on to earn All-American honors in outdoor track, finishing 5th at the NCAA Championship in the steeplechase. A Dietetics major, Colleen posted a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester and finished the 2011-12 academic year with a 3.97 GPA.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Sean Quinn

Sean Quinn was a consistent scorer on FSU's `B' squad and added depth to the nationally-ranked squad throughout the 2011 cross country season. Quinn competed in three meets, helping the Seminoles to runner-up team finishes at the Covered Bridge and Seminole Invitational meets. Also a member of the distance squad during the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons, Sean placed in the Top 20 at the Royal XC Challenge in Charlotte, NC.  A double-major in International Affairs and Philosophy, Sean posted a perfect 4.0 GPA last year and boasts a career 3.832 GPA.

FOOTBALL

JOSH GEHRES

A redshirt junior from Tallahassee, Josh Gehres is one of 11 Seminole football players on the active roster that has already earned an undergraduate degree. Gehres earned his degree in finance and was honored with the Matt Schmauch Award in the spring of 2012 as the football player who best characterizes the values of the awards namesake, which include accountability and responsibility in the classroom. Gehres has not only shown those qualities in his school work but also on the football field where he has tirelessly worked back from injuries to carve a valuable role on the Seminoles' special teams unit.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Andrea Kaelin

A three-year member of the Florida State women's golf team, Andrea Kaelin's efforts helped the Seminoles advance to three consecutive NCAA Championship tournaments.  Andrea is characterized by the coaching staff and every player she played with as `the best teammate they ever played with'.  The shining moment of her Seminole career came in the third round of the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championship as she led the Seminoles with a one over par 73 to help the Seminoles keep their position as a top eight team in the regional. 

MEN'S GOLF

Kyle Cobb

Kyle Cobb enjoyed an outstanding career as a three-year member of the Seminole men's golf team and received an undergraduate degree in political science in 2011and will receive his graduate degree in integrated marketing communications in 2013.  Kyle was a member of three NCAA Championship Tournament teams at FSU and helped the Seminoles to a third place finish in 2010. 

SAND VOLLEYBALL

CAITLIN HAWORTH

Caitlin Haworth, who helped lead the sand volleyball team to the Final Four of the first-ever National Championship in the sport, graduated from UNC Pembroke before earning her master's degree in Sport Management from FSU last year while playing. She held a 3.5 GPA while in graduate school and is now currently the volunteer assistant coach for the Noles' indoor volleyball team. Last season, she posted a record of 24-5, including an 11-2 mark in dual matches.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

CASEY SHORT

A four-year starter for the Florida State women's soccer team, Casey Short missed the 2011 season due to injury, but Casey has started every match during her senior campaign as part of the Seminole backline which ranks among the nation's best.  A six-time member of the FSU Dean's List and two-time honoree on the President's List for achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA,  Casey graduated in the fall of 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminology and a minor in sociology.  She is currently pursuing a masters' in sport management.

SOFTBALL

KELLY HENSLEY

For the second consecutive year, junior Kelly Hensley represents the Florida State softball team as the Golden Torch winner. The Niceville, Florida native is an exercise science major with a 3.931 GPA. Kelly was also recognized for her academic excellence at the team's year-end banquet last summer, developing a strong reputation for her classroom success. Kelly excelled on the field as well stepping in as the starter at first base for last year's squad that finished 47-16 and made the NCAA postseason for the 13th straight year.

Women's SWIMMING AND DIVING

Tori Richmond

As team captain for the 2011-2012 season, Tori Richmond finished her collegiate swimming career with a ninth place showing in the 200 IM, 10th place finish in the 200 breast and an 11th place finish in the 400 IM at the 2012 ACC Championships. Richmond is the current school record holder in the 200 IM and was a two-time member of the ACC-All Academic Team.

Men's Swimming and Diving

Tom Neubacher

The Golden Torch winner from men's swimming and diving is Tom Neubacher.  Tom qualified for the NCAA Championships with a dominating performance at the Zone B Qualifier in winning the 1-meter diving. At the 2012 ACC Championships, Tom earned All-ACC honors with a bronze medal showing on 1-meter. He also placed fifth on 3-meter and seventh on platform. Tom also earned a bronze at the 2012 Winter Diving National Championships in Knoxville, Tn and was named to the ACC-All Academic Team in 2012.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Leyla Erkan

It's tough to rise above all the other academic stars on the women's tennis team, but Leyla Erkan has earned the distinction.  As a freshman last year, Erkan began the season playing on the number four court and worked her way up playing the majority of the season at the number one singles court. Throughout the 2011-12 season, Leyla won a total of 16 singles and 11 doubles matches and matched those accomplishments in the classroom.

 

Men's Tennis

Cristian Gonzalez Mendez

Cristian Gonzalez Mendez started the 2012 season with six consecutive wins and finished the year with a 19-15 record to help the Seminoles advance to the NCAA tournament for the 10th consecutive season. The sophomore from Spain clinched both matches at the 2012 ACC Championships where the team reached the semifinals for the first time since 2009. A communications major with a 3.929 GPA, Cristian was named to the ACC Honor Roll this past year.

 

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Bree Anne Campbell, r-FR:

Bree Anne Campbell competed during the outdoor season in both the discus and the hammer throw, recording new career-bests in both events during the 2012 spring season. Campbell scored her first career collegiate win at the Seminole Invitational, hurling the discus 43.72 meters during the same meet where she posted her all-time best in the hammer . Bree Ann posted three top-five finishes on the year and also reached the finals of the discus at the ACC Championship meet. A Creative Writing major, Campbell finished the year with 4.0 GPA.

 

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Charles Janson, SR:

Charles Janson is the fourth member of the Jason family to pole vault for the Seminoles.  Charles capped his collegiate career with a personal-best vault of 4.46 meters at the Seminole Invitational, good for a sixth-place finish. He competed in six meets between the indoor and outdoor seasons. A dual major in Business Management and Marketing, Charles recorded a 3.8 GPA during his final academic year and graduated in April with a cumulative 3.685 GPA.

 

VOLLEYBALL

SARAH WICKSTROM

A superb setter for the reigning NCAA National Semifinal participants, sophomore Sarah Wickstrom is a sport management major who has a 3.250 GPA. Sarah earned a spot on the 2011-12 ACC Academic Honor Roll and finished her spring 2012 semester making the Dean's List. Sarah was an outstanding setter on last year's historic Florida State team, earning ACC All-Freshman Team honors while igniting a lethal offensive attack.

 

WOMEN'S TEAM AWARD

Winning the Golden Torch award for eighth time since Coach Jennifer Hyde's arrival is the Women's Tennis Team.

Last season, the Seminoles continued to rewrite the history books as they qualified for the NCAA Championships for the sixth consecutive year. Francesca Segarelli closed out the 2011-2012 season on a six-match singles winning streak, defeating two ranked opponents. She also went 3-0 in post-season play in singles. Also, Amy Sargeant posted a singles record of 14-3 during the spring season.  Both ladies were named to the ACC - Academic Team for the season.

MEN'S TEAM AWARD

The Florida State men's cross country team, currently ranks No. 14 in the nation, is the winner of the 2011 Golden Torch team award. Last season the Seminoles strung together an impressive postseason run, following up an ACC Championship runner-up finish by winning the NCAA South Regional title. The team capped the year by finishing 12th at the NCAA Championship meet; the third highest finish in program history.

The Seminoles accrued a bevy of individual honors along the way. Four FSU men were earned All-ACC honors and a fifth was named ACC Freshman of the Year. Five were selected to the All South Region team and two others earned All-American honors. Senior Michael Fout was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also earned CoSIDA All-District honors, while the team earned All-Academic honors from the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
