Seminoles Announce Season Schedule

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -  Another challenging schedule awaits the Florida State women’s tennis team for the 2012-13 season.  Ninth-year head coach Jennifer Hyde announced the 2012-13 slate on Wednesday, led by seniors Francesca Segarelli and Amy Sargeant and a three-member signing class, the Seminoles expect marked improvement from the squad that finished in the nation’s top 40 a season ago.

“Again this year we have another schedule set up where we see some great competition both in the fall in through the spring,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “Our conference schedule is as tough as any in the nation with the ACC brining some of the best talent to the table in college tennis.”

The Seminoles will begin a series of fall tournaments starting on Sept. 21 when they head to the Furman Fall Classic.

“We’re really excited to jump start our fall season here in a few weeks at Furman which will host six or seven top 15 schools,” Hyde said. “It will give us a good look as to where we are and what we’ll have at this point.”

Also lined up for the fall are the Roberta Allison Invitational on Oct. 5-7, the ITA South Regional Championship on Oct. 19-21 in Tampa, Fla. and the USF Invitational scheduled from Nov. 2-4.

The spring season begins with two tournaments at the start of 2013, the first on Jan. 19-21 as the Seminoles will head to Orlando, Fla. to play in the UCF Invitational.

The second will be the ITA Kick-off Weekend on Jan. 25-27 in Waco, Texas hosted by Baylor University.  The Seminoles will play in two matches and the winner of the region will punch their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in New York, N.Y., from Feb. 8-10.

In the spring dual matches, Florida State will face seven opponents that finished the 2011-12 season inside the Top 25 in addition to four teams that received rankings by the ITA.

Starting the season on the road, the Seminoles will head to Tampa, Fla. for a match with USF on Feb. 1 before returning home on Feb. 3 to play Memphis at 1 p.m.   Both teams were ranked by the ITA at the end of 2012, with the Bulls taking the No. 43 spot and Memphis finishing at No. 60.

The first home weekend matches are slated for Feb. 15 when UCF comes to town for a dual at 3 p.m. On Feb. 17, the Seminoles will host Georgia State at 1 p.m., a team that broke into the rankings in 2012 at No. 69.

ACC play will open with Miami on Feb. 23 in Coral Gables, Fla. at 11 a.m. The Hurricanes finished at the No. 9 spot in 2012.

From the seven of those Top 25 opponents, the Seminoles will host four of them. The first two will come into Tallahassee starting on March 1 with Clemson at 1 p.m.  The Tigers finished 2012 ranked No. 25.  Five days later, the Seminoles are slated to play the two-time defending national champions in the Florida Gators on March 6 at 4 p.m.

“We are very excited for our matches at home,” Hyde said. “We have some of the best teams in the nationa coming into Tallahassee and it will be great to play those schools in front of our home crowd.”

The other top tiered teams from 2012 will visit Scott Speicher Tennis Center starting on April 12 with Duke. The Blue Devils capped 2012 with an ACC Championship  and a No.3 national ranking.  North Carolina is scheduled on April  14 at 12 p.m. The Tar Heels knocked the Seminoles out of the ACC tournament in 2012 in the quarterfinal round, 4-2, before finishing the season with a No. 8 ranking.  The last time these two teams came to Tallahassee was in 2011, when Florida State was in the midst of an eight match winning streak, knocking off five teams in the top 10.

The 2013 dual match season will conclude on the road, when the Seminoles will visit Virginia on Apr.20 and Virginia Tech on April 21.

The ACC tournament is scheduled for April 25-28 in Cary, N.C. and the first rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be from May 10-12. The final site will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Ill. on May- 17-27.

All home matches are schedule to be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. However, play could be moved to the Indoor Tennis Facility. For more information, check back to Seminoles.com at the proper times.
