NOTTINGHAM, Great Britain - Rising junior Daneika Borthwick closed out her summer season in Europe with an appearance in the finals of the $10,000 Nottingham in doubles play last week. The Aegon GB Pro-Series Nottingham event took place on the hard courts of the Nottingham Tennis Center in Great Britain from July 26-Aug 4.
"I had a good tournament," Borthwick said. "It was nice to end the summer with an appearance in the final. Hopefully I can take the confidence from doubles into the fall season."
Borthwick teamed up Anna Fitzpatrick, who was also from Great Britain. The pair won two matches in the main draw en route to the finals.
As the No. 2 seed in the draw, the duo first handled Anneka Watts and Sophie Watts of Great Britain, 6-1, 6-1. Borthwick and Fitzpatrick advanced to the semifinals and defeated Gabriela Van de Graff and Monique Zuur of the Netherlands in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
In the finals, Borthwick and Fitzpatrick could not take down the top-ranked pair of Anna Smith and Melanie South of Great Britain. They fell by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Borthwick also competed in singles, however she dropped her first match to Pippa Horn (GBR), 6-3, 6-2.
"I'm looking forward to heading back to FSU for the season," Borthwick said. "I want to continue to improve and hopefully have some good results in the individual and team events we have coming up."
Borthwick will return to Tallahassee after playing in three tournaments in Great Britain over the summer. The Cumbria native also represented her country at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia back in July.
