Seminole Duo Fall In NCAA Championships

May 22, 2014

ATHENS, Ga. (Seminoles.com) - The No. 30-ranked doubles team of Kerrie Cartwright and Daneika Borthwick were defeated by No. 78 Michaela Capannolo and Yuki Chiang from Pepperdine by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

"For 12 games, and to get up 6-1, 4-1, the girls played perfectly and nearly flawless tennis," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "They were in complete attack mode, they were very sharp with their execution and fundamentals and were in complete control of the match. Up 4-1 in the 2nd set, Pepperdine really started swinging out and playing very aggressively which forced us to back off a bit.

"We needed to make an adjustment at that point, needed to stay fundamentally solid and needed to expose their weakness more, but we didn't quite do that like we needed. We had too many errors from that point forward in the match and gave away too many freebies."

The Noles started out set one by exchanging games on serve at 1-1 before taking the next five games in a row to close out a dominant first set, 6-1.

In set two, the Pepperdine pair struck first and grabbed a 1-0 lead but FSU stormed back to take a 4-1 lead. Pepperdine's Capannolo and Chiang broke serve and held serve to get within one at 4-3. The Waves' duo continued their scoring streak and secured the next three games and the set, winning 6-4 to force the decisive third set.

The third set was tightly contested as each team traded the first five games as Pepperdine got out to a 3-2 lead. The pair of Waves then pulled away in the set and won the match 6-2.

Cartwright and Borthwick ended the season with a 15-10 record together, including a 13-5 mark during the spring dual-match season.

"It's frustrating to lose a match where we played 90 percent of the match as solid as we did, but you have to keep the foot on the gas pedal and finish the job," added Hyde. "These girls worked very hard to get to where they are and I hate it for them that they weren't able to move on to the next round.

"At the same time, they have a lot to build on looking ahead to this summer and to next season. They've improved and grown a ton this season as a partnership. They have both led successfully at the top two spots in our singles and doubles lineups all year in the toughest tennis conference in the nation and they both have many more big moments ahead of them as we look ahead to next year."
