TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State women's tennis team travels to Columbia, South Carolina where FSU, Virginia Commonwealth University, Hampton University and host University of South Carolina will compete in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Florida State will take on Virginia Commonwealth at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Hampton and South Carolina will face off at 2 p.m. The winners will play Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Seminoles completed the 2002 regular season with a record of 12-14 and ranked 47th nationally. The Seminoles played 20 matches against a ranked team in 2002. The Seminoles feature one player ranked nationally, Anca Dumitrescu at 47th. She will also be playing in the NCAA Tournament for singles. The Seminole tandem of Jessica Balbuena and Lauren Walker are ranked 48th nationally.

The Virginia Commonwealth Rams enter the postseason ranked 24th with a record of 17-2 after completing a schedule featuring 10 ranked opponents. The Seminoles and the Rams played five common opponents in the 2002 season. Those teams were Miami, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Maryland and Florida Atlantic. The Rams won all of these contests, while the Seminoles 4-2 against these teams. Virginia Commonwealth also defeated regional opponents Hampton and South Carolina during the regular season.

The Rams feature two players and one doubles team ranked in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Seniors Andrea Ondrisova and Martina Nedelkova are ranked 38th and 39th, respectively. The two are also ranked 25th nationally in doubles. Ondrisova went undefeated in the regular season, playing mostly at no. 2 singles but moving up to the no. 1 position for four matches. Medelkova went 18-2 in dual match play, splitting time at the no. 1 and no. 2 spots.

The South Carolina Gamecocks enter the NCAA Tournament ranked 13th nationally. The Gamecocks finished the regular season 16-7. Their schedule featured nineteen matches against a ranked opponent. The Gamecocks feature three players ranked nationally, Jennifer Radman (48), Katarina Markovski (72), and Kathy Boyanovich (90). The tandem of Radman and Boyanovich were also ranked 18th, and will be playing the the NCAA doubles tournament. Radman and Markovski both received invitations to the NCAA Tournament for singles.

The Hampton Pirates come to Columbia with a record of 15-9 overall. The Pirates swept the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a perfect 10-0 record. The Pirates played three teams that were on the Seminoles schedule. The Pirates defeated fellow MEAC team, Florida A & M, but fell to Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville University.
