Seminoles Ready to Heat Up South Florida

Feb. 21, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - After climbing two more spots in the polls this week, the No. 25 ranked Florida State women's tennis team is ready to open ACC play this weekend. The Seminoles will travel to Miami for a match against Florida International on Friday at 10 a.m. before starting conference play against Miami on Saturday at 11 a.m.

"ACC play is firing up for us," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "Every opportunity we get we have to take full advantage of. We're excited to get down to Miami. It's going to be good to gage where we are right now. We have everything to gain this weekend and we have a lot to prove."

The Seminoles are 6-1 on the season, coming off a 7-0 win against UCF (Feb. 15) and a 5-2 victory over No. 61 Georgia State (Feb. 17).

After the weekend's matches at home, seniors Amy Sargeant and Francesca Segarelli extended their singles winning streaks to nine, becoming the first pair to do so since Kia Asberg and Marian Rainc in 1999. Asberg and Rainc both went 15-0 between Feb. 14 and March 28.

FIU is looking for its first win this year, while Miami is 6-2 on the season, suffering losses to No. 2 UCLA and No. 14 Northwestern at the ITA National Team Indoors. Miami will be the second of eight top 25 teams the Seminoles will face this year.

Florida State holds a 15-5 advantage in the all-time series against FIU, however the Seminoles only have four wins in program history over the Hurricanes. The last victories over the `Canes were during the 2008 season, Hyde and the Seminoles notched two wins - the first during the regular season 5-2 while the second came in the ACC Tournament, 4-2.

"We're going to have to play a solid weekend across the board," Hyde said. "FIU has new energy in their program and it's going to be a fight. We aren't going to take anything for granted. We're just going to play for consistency and complete matches and so far we've done a pretty good job of that."
