Down The Stretch

Feb. 3, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No.21 Florida State women's tennis team is set to play their fourth match in seven days as they will face the Florida International Golden Panthers at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center .

"Saturday's match is a big one for us, playing another in-state school in FIU" Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We're excited to play at home. We're really enjoying this long streak of home matches."

The Seminoles are coming off a 5-0, mid-week win against North Florida moving to 3-1 on the season. After a slow start, juniors Amy Sargeant and Carolina De los Santos secured the doubles point for FSU on the first court against Aline Berkenbrock and Lorena Aviles in a tiebreak set, taking the match 9-8 (7-4).

In singles, De Los Santos rolled to her fourth win while on the fifth court against Marina Cunningham 6-1, 6-2 and redshirt junior Noemie Scharle snatched her second win of the season while facing Simona Weymar in the number four position, 6-0, 6-2. After a staggering start in the first set, Sargeant would clinch the match for FSU in the sixth spot as she won in three sets against Melanie Agurrie, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. After winning the first set, freshmen Leyla Erkan overcame a battle herself, as she rallied to take her match 6-2, 7-6 after being down 5-1 in the second set against Danielle Day on the third court.

The Golden Panthers are currently 1-3 in 2012, but they've faced some tough opponents. In their four matches, they've played two Top 15 teams in No.14 Clemson, where they lost 6-1 and No.6 Georgia, falling 7-0. Their only win of the season came against No.66 Fresno State, 4-2.

Florida State holds the all-time series advantage 14-5 against the Golden Panthers. Last season, the Seminoles opened the 2011 campaign with FIU, coming out with a victory, 5-2. Under Hyde, the series is tied 3-3 with FSU's wins coming in 2007, 2008 and 2011. Two of their three losses came during the 2005, with one in the regular season, 5-2 and in the other in the NCAA Tournament 4-2.

"We're looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd," Hyde said. "They've been unbelievably supportive of our young ladies and we're very thrilled to get back on court on Saturday at 11 a.m."
