TAMPA, Fla. - As the rigorous fall season winds down, the Florida State women's tennis team produced another solid showing this past weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Tampa, Fla.
"This weekend was excellent for us," associate coach Oliver Foreman said. "We pinned ourselves against some of the best teams in the country and we picked up some huge wins against those ranked players. It was a pretty successful tournament and we played well. We are gaining more confidence and we will definitely take that with us as we move forward this year."
The weekend kicked off on Friday Oct. 19 with all three Seminole doubles pairs advancing from the round of 32. Sophomore Daneika Borthwick and senior Francesca Segarelli defeated Whitney Byrd and Jocelyn Ffriend from Georgia State 8-3 while junior Kristina Schleich and sophomore Leyla Erkan beat Elizabeth Means and Sarah Means representing Florida Gulf Coast, 8-1. Senior Amy Sargeant and sophomore Mia Vriens won a battle against a duo from Florida in Sofie Oyen and Brianna Morgan 8-4.
Moving on to singles, the Seminoles captured a trio of victories in the first round beginning with Borthwick. Borthwick cruised to a win against Sarah Means of Florida Gulf Coast, 6-3, 6-2 before knocking out Jenna Dorefler of UCF 6-0, 6-1. Those two wins advanced Borthwick into the round of 16.
One of the other two wins in the first round came from Sargeant as she defeated Natalia Vavulina of Georgia State, 6-3, 6-1. Sargeant would fall to Morgan in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.
Vriens battled out the third round-one win for the Seminoles as she beat Olivia Janowicz of Florida, 6-3, 7-5 before falling to No. 62 Kate Fuller of Georgia, 6-0, 6-3.
"She had a huge win in the first round," Foreman said. "She had one of the tougher draws in the tournament and just had a tremendous victory over Janowicz who won the regional event two years ago. Janowicz displayed some high quality tennis and Mia took care of her. Mia came back to school in shape, she's fit, she's been working hard and she's been playing the best tennis we've seen since she became a Seminole."
Both Erkan and No. 81 Segarelli fell in the first round of singles, placing them in the consolation draw, where Segarelli picked up two wins, while Erkan record one victory.
Starting on Saturday, Oct. 20 Erkan's first round consolation win was earned against Natasha Basma with a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Segarelli started with a handy win against Johanna Sterkel of Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1, 6-1 before defeating Byrd 6-3, 7-6 in order to advance into the quarterfinal.
Picking up with the second round of doubles, Segarelli and Borthwick first defeated Virginie Stein and Alexandra Apostu of Kennesaw State, 8-4. Advancing into the quarterfinal, the duo would turn up their tennis and knock out Alex Cercone and Carolina Hitimana of Florida, 8-1.
"We saw some great things from these two this weekend especially in this match," Foreman said. "Beating the Gators was huge and when this pair gets it together on the same day, they can beat anyone in the country."
After her doubles match with the pair from the Gators, Borthwick faced No.49 and the No. 6 seed in the draw in Cercone for the round of 16 in singles. Borthwick would win the first set, however Cercone outlasted the Seminole in the second before Borthwick came back to hang on and take her third victory against a ranked opponent this fall season, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. With that win, Borthwick moved on to the quarterfinal match.
Borthwick's quarterfinal match was the first on court on Sunday, Oct. 21 where she battled the No. 37 player and No. 1 overall seed in the championships in Maho Kowase of Georgia. Borthwick came out of the gate strong, but fell short of the semifinals in another three-set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"Daneika had an excellent tournament," Foreman said. "She earned another top win but unfortunately she fell to the top seed. She had her chances to win that match but after this fall season, she'll be one of the better players in the country."
In the consolation brackets, Segarelli lost her quarterfinal match to Janowicz 6-1, 6-0. Janowicz moved on and earned the championship in the draw.
Segarelli and Borthwick paired back up for the semifinal showdown against Abigail Tere-Apisha and Masa Grgan of Georgia State, but the Seminoles' pair were defeated by a score of 8-5.
"Seeing Fran and Daneika in doubles was impressive," Foreman said. "They were able to make it to the semifinals behind three wins. They had their chances to take that match, but they fell short on their opportunities and Georgia State was a very effective and good team. "
The Seminoles ended the weekend with a total of 13 wins, tallying eight in singles and five in doubles. Florida State will now look to its final tournament of the year starting on Nov. 2-4 as the Noles head back down to Tampa for the USF Invitational.
