ATHENS, Ga. - The Florida State women's tennis team took to the courts on Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on day two of the ITA Southeast Regional. While rain moved all competition indoors - and the singles consolation draw to Sunday - the Seminoles still found success with Majlena Pedersen posting an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win in the singles B draw.
"I was so glad to see Majlena grab another win today and move into the semifinals," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "She's working on some very specific things right now and it's great to see that pay off for her."
Pedersen will go against Annika Hepp of UCF in Sunday's semifinals at 10:30 a.m. The singles B draw final is scheduled for later in the day at 1:00 p.m.
Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright faced a formidable doubles opponent in the No. 4 seed pairing of Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque of Miami. The `Noles and `Canes traded serves but the Miami duo proved too much in the end, defeating Borthwick and Cartwright, 8-6.
"D and Kerrie played really well this morning and lost in a very tight 8-6 battle," Hyde said. "Had they stepped up on a few key points there's no doubt they could have moved on to the next round. They continue to play better every match, and they are getting there."
Despite the rain changing the schedule, the singles consolation draw remains the same for Florida State, with four matches starting at 9:00 a.m. Cartwright going up against Cortney Cesarini of UCF, Kristina Schleich versus Virginie Stein from Kennesaw State, Duda Dos Santos will be facing Rasheeda McAdoo from Georgia Tech and Laurence Porry will play against Jana Hueckinghaus of Kennesaw State.
Borthwick received a walkover and will continue in the consolation draw at noon against the winner of Mercer's Isabel Dennis and FGCU's Johanna Sterkel.
"After a long day of weather delays, we are ready to get back to a full day of tennis tomorrow," added Hyde.
