LOS ANGELES - Florida State women's tennis senior Francesca Segarelli advanced in the qualifying rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Segarelli defeated the No.1 seed in the draw in Zoe DeBryucker of North Carolina 6-3, 6-3.
"Fran was ready," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "To pick off the number one seed in this event during the first round was great for her. She played very mature tennis against a player who has had much success in her career. Fran played a complete match, and stayed in control for most of both sets. Each round in this event requires players to step up a bit more each time they step on court. Her second round match later today will be no exception, but to get that first win under her belt gives her some great momentum heading into her next battle."
Segarelli will await her opponent and face-off at 4:15 PT on Tuesday as she will need two more victories in order to advance to the Main Draw of the event which is scheduled to begin on Oct.4.
Four of Segarelli's teammates played in the pre-qualifying rounds of the tournament, which started on Sept. 29 and ran through Sept. 30.
"In the Pre-Qualifying event we saw some really good tennis from our players," Hyde said. "The level of tennis overall was very good. I think we have a lot to look forward to when it comes time for spring."
In singles, sophomore Daneika Borthwick picked up two wins as she first defeated Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA 6-2, 6-4. Moving on, Borthwick then beat Sofia Hager of Oregon 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Gabriella De Simone of Southern California 7-5, 6-2, keeping Borthwick from advancing into the Qualifying rounds.
"Daneika did a great job of winning her two matches," Hyde said. "Unfortunately she came up a little short on the last day in order to advance, but she played at a high level and knocked off the number four seed in the draw along the way."
Sophomore Mia Vriens won her first round match against Caroline Magusson of Tulane 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Rebecca Shine of Louisville 6-2, 6-4. Her classmate Leyla Erkan fell in the first round to Boston College's Jessica Wacnik 7-6 (5), 6-2.
"Mia won her first match handily," Hyde said. "In her second match, she came across an opponent who was just on fire, but she still managed to play very tight and at a very high level."
The Seminoles also played in the pre-qualifying rounds of doubles. Segarelli teamed up with senior Amy Sargeant to win their first round match against Fellerhoff/Shine of Louisville 9-7 before falling to McPhillips/VanNguyen of UCLA in the second round, 8-5.
"Amy and Fran were down 5-2 in both of their matches," Hyde said. "They were able to dig out of the hole and get that first match, but the second one they got behind and just couldn't catch up. They played from behind for most of the match and it made it difficult and in these kinds of tournaments, you can't let that happen."
Florida State's sophomore team of Borthwick and Vriens lost in the first round to Gabb/Gaytan-Leach of Missouri, 8-4.
