HOUSTON, Texas - The Florida State women's tennis team completed it's spring break tour with a win over Tulane University, to go 5-1 on the trip. The only loss on the trip occured in the first match against Miami last Saturday. The team will now have a full week off before taking the courts against Virginia on Saturday, March 20th.
Against Tulane, junior Kia Asberg and freshman Marina Raic continued to sizzle. They each won for the tenth straight time. Asberg improved her dual match record to 15-1 this season. Raic is second on the team in wins to Asberg, with 14. Sophomore Nanette Duxin snapped her recent three match losing streak and defeated Rice's Maiko Cook convincingly 6-1, 6-1. Duxin is currently the only Seminole ranked in the top 100 in the country by the ITA, at #71. With singles wins by Duxin, Raic, and Asberg the Lady Seminoles went into doubles play needing to win two out of three to take the match. Duxin and partner, freshman Alida Gallovits, won 9-8 at No.1, but the No.2 team of Raic and freshman Jessica Balbuena lost for only the fourth time this season, 9-8. That left the match in the hands of the No.3 team, senior Kylie Thompson and sophomore Natalie Carratala. Playing at No.3 for the second straight match Thompson and Carratala came together and played flawlessly against Tulane's No.3 duo of Anneli Axsater and Molly Rollouer, winning the match 8-0.
The Lady Seminoles won the match 5-4, and improved their record to 13-3 this season. FSU's home record is 7-2 and they will be home for the next five matches before hitting the road again for their final four matches of the dual match season. Their road record is 6-1. Florida State opens ACC competition against the University of Virginia on March 20th, at 9:30am, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center here on the campus of Florida State University.
