TAMPA, Fla. -  For the first time since 2009, the 29th ranked Florida State women's tennis team defeated USF.  The Seminoles conquered three ranked opponents between singles and doubles to capture a 6-1 victory at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts this afternoon.

"Today was a great day for our girls," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "Especially since our seniors Amy (Sargeant) and Fran (Segarelli) got their first win against USF as seniors. We had opportunities against this team in the past and we let it slip away, but not today. These girls were warriors. All of them competed so well today."

Florida State built up the momentum early by capturing the doubles point.

After Sargeant and sophomore Mia Vriens fell 8-1 on court two, sophomores Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright picked up a huge win on court one in just their first time playing together. The duo defeated the No. 50 pair of Katie Vasenina and Loreta Alonso 8-4, leaving the point to be decided on court three.

"We got a ranked win out of Kerrie and Daneika against a very experienced USF team," Hyde said. "They stepped up when they needed to in their match.  Once they decided to play big, they played very well. "

Junior Kristina Schleich and Segarelli were up 6-4 on court three just as Borthwick and Cartwright evened the doubles score. Schleich and Segarelli then added a game to go up 7-4 before USF's Fanny Fracassi and Paula Montoya won the next two games making the score 7-6.  Schleich went on serve and was able to close out the match 8-6.

"They were neck and neck at the end of that match," Hyde said.  "When we needed to, we stepped up and played big. Our doubles is getting better, but I was very proud going into singles with that big doubles point."

The Seminoles won five out of the six singles matches in straight sets, including two over ranked players.

No. 48 Vriens made the score 2-0 with a victory on court three against Danielle Mills 6-4, 6-2 just before No. 100 Sargeant got her seventh win of the spring against Fracassi on court four, 6-4, 6-2.

The clinching match of the day came from court one as 37th ranked Borthwick upset No. 35 Vasenina 6-4, 6-4.   The Bulls picked up their only point on court six as Alessandra Bonte defeated Schleich in a tight 6-3, 6-4 contest.

With the match in the bag at 4-1, No. 73 Segarelli and Cartwright were left on court, battling out their matches in the second set.

After taking the first set, Cartwright had to fight off Montoya in a tiebreak in the second in order to take her first match in the Garnet and Gold.  Cartwight won 6-2, 7-6 on court five.

No. 73 Segarelli ended the day for the Seminoles on court two against No. 75 Alonso.  After winning the first set, Segarelli came back from being down 5-4 in the second to take the set and the match in a tiebreak.  Segarelli grabbed her third win of the season over a ranked player, 6-3, 7-6.

"We just continue to battle," Hyde said. "This team competes so hard. Everyone stayed on their court and took care of their business and did their job.  As long as we keep doing that we're going to keep getting better. The confidence is going to keep growing. We're certainly going to enjoy this win because it feels really good for everyone."

The Seminoles will take a little break from competition before returning home for two matches. Florida State will host UCF on Feb. 15 before taking on Georgia State on Feb. 17. Check back to Seminoles.com, Facebook and Twitter for more information.
