Lady Seminoles Head To ACC Championships

FSU women's swimming to compete at Chapel Hill February 17-19.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Lady Seminoles will compete in the ACC Championships beginning Thursday, Februray 17 and concluding on Saturday, February 19. Each day, preliminaries will begin at 11:00am followed by finals at 7:00pm.

Where: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
When: February 17-19, 2000
Who: Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Maryland, NC State, #16 North Carolina, #8 Virginia

1999-2000 SEASON:
Florida State enters the meet with a 9-4 record, 1-0 in the league, doubling the number of wins from the 1998-99 season.

The Lady Seminoles notched wins over Miami, NC State, Washington State, IRCC (2), Army, Florida A&M, Darton and Florida Atlantic.

The team had only four losses on the year, all against ranked opponents: #6 Auburn, #10 Florida, #14 Minnesota and #24 LSU.

Sophomore Christy Cech has won the 50 Free in every meet this year and the 100 Free in all meets except LSU.

Two Lady Seminoles accomplishd NCAA Consideration times. Cech swam a 23.38 in the 50 Free and senior Tanya Gurr swam a 1:50.14 in the 200 Free.

Diver Marya Sabesky broke the school record in the three-meter diving in a dual meet with her score of 301.50 against IRCC.

The Lady Seminoles erased a Gibb Pool Record at Washington State with their time of 3:27.85 in the 400 Free Relay.

Despite a 6th place finish at the championships, the Lady Seminoles swam NCAA Consideration times in the 200 Free Relay, 50 Free, 200 Free and 200 Medley Relay. Florida State finaled in 16 events and scored a total of 409 points, only eight behind North Carolina.

Head Coach Neil Harper
(Louisiana State '88)

Head Coach Neil Harper returns to Florida State after spending two years as the head coach of the women's swim team at Ohio State University. At the helm of the Lady Buckeye squad, Harper posted a 15-12 record and had six ladies qualify for the NCAA Championships. The squad was also named an NCAA All-American Academic Team and 20 swimmers were named to the All-Big Ten Academic team.

Before heading to Ohio State, Harper spent three years as an assistant coach for the men's and women's programs at Florida State. His responsibilities included recruiting and coordinating the strength and conditioning programs as well as working closely with the individual medley and stroke groups. During his time at FSU, Harper coached 17 NCAA All-Americans as well as FSU's first National Champion, Stephen Parry, who won the 200 Butterfly in 1997. He was also an intrigal part of the 1997 men's Top 10 finish and the women's Top 30 finish.

After graduating from LSU, Harper served as an assistant coach for the men's and women's programs at his alma mater. From 1988-94, he coached 21 swimmers to NCAA All-America honors and coached seven Southeastern Conference champions.

During his years as a Tiger, Harper was a seven event All-American, won four SEC individual titles and as a senior, captained the team to the conference title. He competed in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics on the 400 meter medley relay, finishing sixth in the Los Angeles Olympics and fourth in the Seoul Olympics.

Harper is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) and the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

Harper and his wife Paige, who as an NCAA All-American and SEC breastroke champion at LSU, have been married for nine years and have two daughters Katherine (5) and Kelly (3).

The 1999-2000 Season...
"This season has been a learning experience for us. We've gained a lot of experience, especially in competing against top-ranked teams. Our only losses this season came against teams that were ranked in the top 15 in the nation, and we competed really well against them.

"We're really coming together as a team. I would have to say this season has been successful with improving our swims. There were some bumps and bruises along the way but we've come through it with a lot of confidence. We can hold our heads high, seeing as we competed well against the ranked teams and beat the teams we were supposed to beat. We're looking at potentially having the best season ever for FSU women's swimming."

The ACC Championships...
" We're really excited about the meet. We have the quality confidence we need. We aren't too fast and have hit our taper at the right time. I really like the way we look in the water.

"We've got this confidence about us right now since we've competed so well this season. There is an air about FSU swimming and this team, an air of confidence, that this team hasn't had in a while. They have the confidence not only in themselves but in each other."

First season back at FSU...
"It's been fun! There have been a lot of growing pains and adjustments but you get all of that with any sort of change. When you bring in a different type of philosophy and attitude into a program you have to make those types of adjustments.

"My family has had fun being back in Tallahassee and at FSU. This has been a great year for FSU sports and women's swimming is no exception. It's been exciting to see the changes since I've left and how things have developed. I've just enjoyed being here."

THIS SEASON: Won the 200 IM against FAU, Florida, Miami, Washington State and LSU and finished third in the event against Auburn...finished third in the 200 Free and 200 Fly against IRCC...finished second in the 100 Breast and fifth in the 100 Fly against NC State.

ON BLACHFORD: Holds the school record in the 400 IM...an All-American...majoring in Sport Management.

THIS SEASON: Won the 200 Free against Miami, Washington State, NC State and FAU, finishing second in the event against LSU and Auburn and third against Florida...won the 100 Free against Florida and finished second in the event against Miami, NC State and Auburn and third against Washington State...won the 100 Back against FAU and the 200 Back against IRCC...won the 50 Free against IRCC and finished second against NC State.

ON GURR: A two-time NJCAA All-American in the 50, 100 and 200 Free each from IRCC...holds the NJCAA record in the 200 Free...was a member of the 1995 and 1996 Zimbabwe National Team...majoring in fashion textiles and merchandising.

ON SABESKY: Has finaled on both boards at the ACC's in 1997 and 1999 and finaled on the one-meter in 1998...an ACC All-Academic honor roll selection...double majoring in marketing and communications.
