TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State sand volleyball team will host the USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Tryouts for the national team on Sunday.
The tryouts will feature some of the country's best sand volleyball players and run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.
"There will be a great pool of players here in Tallahassee for the USA Tryouts on Sunday," FSU sand volleyball head coach Danalee Corso said. "This tryout shows that Tallahassee is becoming a destination for beach volleyball and that Florida State has one of the country's top facilities."
Top beach volleyball athletes between the ages of 12 and 25 will compete in different drills for the opportunity to be selected for the Future Select-U15, Youth-U19, Junior-U21 and Senior A2-U26 national teams that will represent the United States in various national and international competitions including the Beach High Performance Championships on July 18-22 in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Athletes will compete in drills relating to ball-handling, leaping ability, speed and agility.
"This tryout will gage an athlete's athleticism, skills and general volleyball IQ," said Corso, who coached various beach volleyball national teams before becoming the Seminoles' first head coach last summer. "This is a great way for a player to get in the pipeline for USA volleyball."
All-American Aurora Newgard and rising sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri have been a part of USA Volleyball high performance teams in the past, and both are expected to be at Sunday's tryout along with many of the other members of the FSU sand volleyball squad that finished third at the AVCA National Championships in April.
