Sand Volleyball Hosts UAB and FAU at 10 a.m. Saturday

April 20, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With its spot at next weekend's Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships officially sewn up, the Florida State sand volleyball team will host a pair of tune-up matches on Saturday at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.

The Seminoles will face UAB at 10 a.m. and FAU at 11 a.m. The Blazers and the Owls will meet at 12 p.m.

FSU's five-court complex is located north of the soccer and softball fields and between the track and field complex and the parking garage on Spirit Way. Parking will be available in the lot across from the courts and in the Spirit Way parking garage.

Three Seminoles will be honored in a Senior Day celebration before the first match. Jekaterina Stepanova, Visnja Djurdjevic and Caitlin Haworth, a graduate student, will all play in their final home competitions for the Noles.

"We've done some partner changes and we have a couple of nagging injuries," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "All along I've been saying we need to keep our level of play high. We're still playing great, and we are improving. The team and the coaches are preparing for next week. We're excited.

"We have three seniors - two of them from the indoor team - and Caitlin has been with us since September. They've all been a part of our strong starting lineup. It will be nice to honor them and the work they've done this season."

The Seminoles, 13-0 in dual matches this season, will look to wrap up the regular season with a pristine 15-0 mark with a pair of victories on Saturday.

Florida State's foray into the initial collegiate season of sand volleyball has been an unquestioned success. In addition to their perfect dual record, the Seminoles have captured the team title at four of five tournaments, falling only to Pepperdine at the USC Tournament in March.

FSU will get another crack at the Waves next weekend at the national championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. Led by the nation's No. 1 seeded tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, the Seminoles will need to get past, not just, Pepperdine, but also Long Beach State and College of Charleston in the team competition on April 28.

For now, the Seminoles will focus on a pair of tune-ups before next weekend's final exam.
