Sand Volleyball Hosts Florida State Pairs Challenge

April 16, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team will host Georgia State, ULM and South Carolina this weekend for the FSU Pairs Challenge featuring pool play on Friday and Saturday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.

"It is always great to compete at home," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "It is a lot easier to sleep in our own bed and compete on the kind of sand that we are used to training in. I think it will be a good weekend for us."

Excluding an intrasquad tune-up on April 26, this will be the last official competition for the Seminoles until the AVCA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 2-4.

"It being the last weekend counting towards The National Championships what we are looking for is to increase the seeds mainly for our No. 1 and 2 teams and to develop the lower teams so everybody is playing a lot of volleyball," Corso said.

The pairs event will feature six pools of four teams. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and will continue all day. Each team will play at least three matches on both days. Seeds for pool play on Saturday will be determined based on the results from Friday. Play will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The last match will start at 3 p.m.

A Team Cup trophy will be awarded to the squad with the most points. Following Saturday's competition, the point scale will work as follows: first place in the Gold pool will earn 12.5 Team Cup points, second place will earn 12 points, third place 11.5 points and fourth place 11 points. The winner of the Silver pool will be awarded 10.5 points and so forth down the finishes of each pool.

This will be the last home competition for seniors Aurora Davis and Fatma Yildirim. Senior Day presentations will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Davis is a three-time team captain and holds a .847 career winning percentage which is best in school history. She was named an All-American in 2012 when she posted a 50-7-1 record on Court 1 for much of the season. In 2014, she has a 30-1 record on Court 1 with partner Jace Pardon.

"In three years I can't remember one time that Aurora even slowed down and was tired or even looked tired at practice," Corso said. "She is an excellent role model for the other athletes. She is just a joy and a pleasure to coach."

Yildirim has been a major contributor to the sand volleyball program for three years. She was also a star on the indoor volleyball team as an outside hitter, winning All-America honors in 2012. She holds a 57-18 career record and is currently 15-1 this season with partner Sarah Wickstrom.

"We have been very lucky to have Fatma come from the indoor team and commit to our team and be equally motivated to play for us," Corso said. "She has been a great asset."

The Florida State sand volleyball team will host their annual intrasquad match on April 26 as the last tune-up for the AVCA National Championships.
