JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team returns to action on Friday and Saturday at Jacksonville University's five-team tournament at the Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex.
Florida State opens the tournament with a dual against UAB on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before taking on Jacksonville at 1 p.m.
On Saturday, the Seminoles will face UAB again at 10 a.m. and battle Stetson (12 p.m.) and Jacksonville (2 p.m.).
"We are starting our matches in our region this weekend," FSU head coach Danalee Corso said. "We feel more than prepared after facing the best teams in the nation in California. Our strength is our depth and we're looking forward to seeing what the region is like this year. Everyone is improving. As a new sport, teams are different year to year. I'm looking forward to see what these teams look like."
Florida State swept both UAB and Stetson, 5-0, twice last spring in the inaugural season of sand volleyball, including a Seminole win over the Blazers in the country's first ever collegiate sand volleyball match on March 3, 2012, in Birmingham, Ala.
The Seminoles are coming off of a dominant performance in Panama City Beach last Sunday where they took the first five places in the pairs bracket play tournament. The team of junior All-American Aurora Davis and senior Fatma Yildirim defeated sophomore Jace Pardon and Senior Marija Milosavlejevic in the championship match.
FSU is 5-2 in dual matches this season with just a pair of close losses to the nation's top two ranked teams No. 1 Pepperdine and No. 2 Long Beach State. FSU has victories over No. 4 USC, No. 7 UCLA and No. 9 Nebraska this season.
