LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team will face defending national champions Long Beach State at the LBSU Sand Courts on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT).
The Seminoles (4-0) will be looking to avenge last season's nail-biting 3-2 loss to the 49ers (2-1) on Day 1 of the 2013 AVCA National Championships.
The matchup with third-ranked Long Beach State starts FSU's ultra-competitive West Coast swing. After facing the 49ers, the Seminoles battle No. 2 USC, Loyola Marymount and No. 6 UCLA on Friday in dual match play at the Trojans' Merle Norman Stadium in Los Angeles before competing against the same squads in bracket play on Saturday.
"We are excited to play the West Coast teams," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "Early in the season we like to play them. It's good competition and it's good to start off strong. We always look forward to playing (Long Beach State). Whether we win, whether we lose, it's a good challenge regardless." ¬
Florida State kicked off the 2014 season by breezing past the competition in dual play at the UNF Sand Invitational last weekend. The Seminoles picked up 5-0 victories over Jacksonville, UNF and ULM, and defeated No. 9 FIU, 4-1.
Junior Stephanie Pellitteri and sophomore Kristina Pellitteri played on Court 2 over the weekend, winning all four matches. The sisters capped off the undefeated first weekend for the Seminoles by coming back against UNF's No. 2 pair in the final match on Sunday to win in three sets. Last season, the Pellitteri's held a 34-5 record playing mostly on Courts 4 and 5 with their only losses outside of teammates in bracket play coming against the Long Beach State duo of Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson, including an epic three-set match at national championships.
Johnson and Jackson went undefeated a year ago playing mostly at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions, but played on Court 2 during the 49ers season debut over the weekend.
Long Beach State returns five of 10 players from last season's national championship squad, but lost two-time national pairs runner-ups Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke.
The 49ers opened the season with wins over No. 10 Stanford and Loyola Marymount, but fell 3-2 to No. 5 Hawai'i.
