LOS ANGELES - The Florida State sand volleyball team captured an 8-7 mark during pool play matches on day one of the four-team, three-day tournament hosted by USC on Friday at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House.

Senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon went 3-0 in their pool, while junior Aurora Newgard and Brittany Tiegs also tallied an unblemished 3-0 record on the first day of the event.

Pepperdine grabbed a 12-3 record, while the host Trojans went 7-8. Long Beach State went 3-12.

Friday's pool play format saw one pairs team from each school compete in each of the five pools. The results determined the seedings for Sunday's single-elimination bracket play tournament that will crown a pairs champions.

On Saturday, the Noles will compete in a double-elimination flight play to determine a team champion.

Pardon and Stepanova won all three of their matches in three sets, routing USC's Kirby Burnham and Kelly Irvin (21-13, 21-10), Pepperdine's Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill (23-21, 21-19) and Long Beach State's Libby Fontanilla and Alma Serna (21-14, 21-15).

The pair remains undefeated this season.

Newgard and Tiegs served two-set losses to Kelley Larsen and Stevi Robinson of Pepperdine (21-16, 23-21), USC's Kendall Bateman and Sam Hirschmann (21-14, 23-21) and Long Beach State's Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson (21-16, 21-19).

Senior Visnja Djurdjecvic and freshman Melanie Pavels went 1-2, with their lone victory coming against Long Beach State's Larn Minkl-Delainey and Aigner Swesey, 21-19, 21-17.

Senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri also had a 1-2 mark, beating Chelsea Cabrajac Haleigh Hampton of Long Beach State, 21-13, 17-21, 15-7.

Junior Lacey Blackman and sophomore Jeassica McGregor went 0-3.
