TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Summer time for a student-athlete often means vacations and refreshing at home before heading back to school in the fall. Redshirt sophomores Jessica Burroughs and Alex Powers will soon be heading to Myrtle Beach, S.C., but it won't be to relax on the sand, instead it will be to compete against some of the best softball players in the nation in the Beach League from July 12 to August 1.

"Since I haven't played in a full game in a long time, both at the plate and in the field, I'm just trying to get back in the groove," said Powers. "Not playing full games for two seasons has been hard for my confidence to be able to step in and know that I can play well because I haven't done it in so long.

"I know this league will help me with that and being able to step up to the plate with a good game plan that I know I can trust will give me confidence moving into the fall and spring season next year."

Powers batted .314 with three doubles and 12 RBI over 40 games in 2014, primarily as a pinch hitter though she did start in eight games as the designated player.

Burroughs had a solid freshman campaign for the Seminoles where she posted a record of 17-1 with an ERA of 2.08 and 125 strikeouts over 114.2 innings. She was a top 25 finalist for the NFCA National Freshman of the Year award and was named to the All-ACC Second Team.

The Beach League was formed in 2013 and consists of 18 games over 21 days as participants are split into several teams and play a round robin tournament. There were around 50 players in the inaugural season last year.

All players will live in a condominium complex in Myrtle Beach for the duration of the league with games held on fields around the area, including Carolina Forest and Conway, S.C. Players from all levels of collegiate softball, including NCAA Division I, II and III as well as NAIA and NJCAA, will be competing in this year's league.

"I'm really excited to get back on the field after taking a few weeks off and I know this experience will help me get ready for the fall," added Burroughs. "We will be able to meet new players and experience a different kind of league which will be a good opportunity for both of us during the summer."
