FSU Softball Players Named To Louisville Slugger Southeast All-Region Team

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Three Lady Seminoles were among the 29 named to the Louisville Slugger Southeast All-Region Teams today, each making their first appearance on the squad. Juniors Serita Brooks and Staci Brandon were selected for First-Team All-Region honors with sophomore Leslie Malerich garnering Second-Team All-Region honors.

Junior Serita Brooks was named as an All-Region outfielder after leading the team and the ACC with a .400 batting average and 53 stolen bases. The junior college transfer from Cottondale, Ala., led the team with 94 hits, seven triples, 53 runs scored and 235 at bats during the regular season. Brooks is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak and is the team leader with 29 multi-hit games, including five multi-RBI games. She garnered ACC Player of the Week honors on February 28th and was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team, All-Tournament Team at Fresno State and the FSU Invitational.

Junior college transfer Staci Brandon received the honors as the designated player. The junior from Peoria, Ariz., has split time between leftfield and designated player, playing in 58 games and starting in 48. She received All-ACC honors as well as ACC Player of the Week honors on April 17th after batting .435 with 10 hits, eight RBI and six runs. Brandon has recorded 18 multi-hit games and has two seven-game hitting streaks, including eight multi-RBI games. She was named to the FSU Invitational All-Tournament team after batting .750 for the weekend and had back-to-back three RBI games against FAMU on April 9th and 12th. Brandon has hit safely in 23 of the last 29 games, including 15 of the last 18.

Sophomore pitcher Leslie Malerich receives the honors after leading the team with a 32-14 record and a 1.20 ERA. A native of Merrillville, Ind., Malerich earned All-ACC honors, was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2000 ACC Softball Championships after leading FSU to the title. A six-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, she was named to the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge All-Tournament team and was named the MVP after notching three wins, including two shutouts and a save. Malerich notched her first career perfect game on March 15th against Princeton and recorded a no-hitter against FAMU. With 32 wins, Malerich is one of five FSU all-time to reach the 30-win mark in a season and set a new FSU single-season appearance record with 53. Malerich leads the pitching staff with 230 strikeouts, 292.1 innings, 15 shutouts and 33 complete games.

The Lady Seminoles join eight other ACC players on the All-Region teams. Brandon, Brooks, Malerich and the rest of the Lady Seminoles will take on Illinois State in the NCAA Regional at UCLA beginning Thursday, May 18th at 6:00pm EST.
