Raleigh, NC - It's hard to imagine a day filled with more ups and downs than Sunday, May 13 was for the Florida State Seminole softball team. Just four hours after losing to North Carolina in the championship round of the ACC Tournament, the Seminoles learned they were a No. 1 seed in the 2001 NCAA Softball Tournament and would be hosting a regional at the Seminole Softball Complex beginning Thursday, May 17 2001.

"This was quite a day," said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "To go from the disappointment of losing the conference tournament for only the second time in ten years to hosting an NCAA Regional as the No. 1 seed is an incredible turnaround in emotions. We are very proud to be hosting and hope that our fans will come out and give us a home field advantage against a great group of teams."

FSU opens regional play against No. 6 seed and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Bethune Cookman College (45-21) Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The other first round match-ups feature No. 2 seed Cal (49-14) versus No. 5 seed Connecticut (35-21) and No. 3 seed Florida Atlantic (45-19) and No. 4 seed Florida (36-25). The Seminoles have played every team in their region this season except for Cal and hold a 7-1 edge over the competition. FSU downed BCC 3-2 in the Florida State/Tallahassee Democrat Tournament in March. Florida State also swept the Gators in Gainesville (5-3, 3-1), swept UCONN in Tallahassee (8-0, 3-0) and went 2-1 against FAU (1-2 in 10 innings, 1-0 and 5-4 in eight innings).

"I am really excited to play at home and get to be in front of our home crowd," said senior shortstop Natalie Bennett. "I think it could be a good thing to play teams we've already played during the season since you know what you are going up against but they know us also. We have to play our best if we want to get to the College World Series."

Tickets for the NCAA tournament can be purchased at the Seminole Athletic Ticket Office in the Moore Athletic Center or by calling (850) 644-1830 or 1-888-FSU-NOLE. For complete information on the NCCA South Regional and the Seminole softball team please visit www.seminoles.com.
