TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Virginia uses a 5-run first inning to eliminate Maryland from the 2003 ACC Softball Championship 6-3 at the Seminole Softball Complex.
Virginia (36-25) will now play Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that contest will play Florida State in the championship game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The Seminoles advanced to the title game by defeating Georgia Tech 5-3, earlier in the day.
Virginia shortstop Heather Field led off the game with a solo homerun to left field. It was Field's 6th homerun of the season. Ruby Rojas and Jessica Taylor each reached base on a fielder's choice. A single by Jenn Wynn advanced the runners and both runners scored when Johanna Kaiser reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs in the inning, Hannah Owings hit a single to center field to score Kaiser and Wynn.
Maryland got all of their runs in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. Malissa Moczulski and Monica Cyphert each singled and advanced a base on a throwing error Jillian Callaway stepped to the plate and singled scoring Moczulski, After Casey Leiter walked, Crystal Rizzuto singled to right field to score Cyphert and Callaway.
Designated player Christina Grimm added one more run tot he board for Virginia in the top of the 6th inning as she blasted her 5th homerun of the season over the left field wall.
Erin Horn picks up the win for Virginia improving her record to 16-11. Aditays takes the loss for the Terrapins (9-8).
