TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Florida State redshirt junior shortstop Maddie O'Brien and redshirt freshman pitcher Jessica Burroughs have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference office on Monday. This is Burroughs' first conference honor of her career while O'Brien has been named ACC Player of the Week three times this season.
"Maddie is a special player and comes to the plate with a plan in each at bat and perfectly executed that plan this week," said head coach Lonni Alameda. "She was only retired once over five games and also played amazing defense. JB also pitched great for us in tough situations, getting big road ACC wins and performing phenomenally at home in front of all the fans and TV audience.
"But the other 21 players on this team also had a big part to play in these awards as the hitters behind Maddie made the most of their opportunities and our defense played so well for Jessica that she could just focus on her job in the circle."
O'Brien nearly had a perfect week at the plate for the Seminoles. The redshirt junior batted .857 (6-for-7) with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI over five games against Pitt and Syracuse. The finalist for 2014 USA Softball Player of the Year recorded a streak of reaching base in 18 consecutive plate appearances over all five games of the week - only being retired on a pop out in the third against Syracuse on April 20.
O'Brien tied an NCAA record with four intentional walks at Pitt in game two on April 16 and her eight consecutive walks over all three Syracuse games on April 19-20 tied an ACC record (Jen Yee, Georgia Tech, 2010) and is the third longest streak in NCAA history. O'Brien ended the week with 12 walks (five intentional), a 2.143 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .950.
Jessica Burroughs was great in the circle for FSU as they swept Pitt and Syracuse last week. The Warner Robins, Ga., native posted a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA over three starts, recording 22 strikeouts over 14.0 innings against only five total walks.
At Pitt, Burroughs struck out five batters in the first 2.0 innings on her way to nine total punchouts in the road ACC win, allowing just two hits over 5.0 innings pitched. The finalist for 2014 NFCA Freshman of the Year matched that feat on April 19 by fanning five Orange batters in the first six outs of game two of Saturday's doubleheader. Burroughs finished that outing with a complete-game shutout, tying a career high with 10 strikeouts and gave up just two walks.
In a controlled start on April 20, Burroughs allowed just one base runner in 2.0 innings and recorded three strikeouts. Burroughs is now 15-1 on the season, has an ERA of 2.12, and has the second-lowest opponent batting average in the ACC (.198).
