Florida State Softball Tops Off Spring Break In Fresno

Florida State softball (15-9) finishes up the Spring Break week in Fresno, Calif., the weekend. The Lady Seminoles will play in the Hallowell Classic, hosted by Fresno State, Friday, March 10- Sunday, March, 12.

The Lady Seminoles are coming off a 5-2 loss to Pacific on Tuesday. Freshman Staci Brandon went 2-2 with a two run double with junior Jen White-Stokes going 1-2 with one run. White-Stokes also took the loss, going four innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Leslie Malerich pitched two innings, striking out three and walking three. The game was called after six innings due to heavy rain.

Scouting Report
#1 UCLA (21-3)

  • UCLA leads the series 5-0. The last time they met was in 1996 with UCLA winning 4- 0.
  • The Bruins have outscored their opponents 137-36
  • Top pitcher has a 0.61 ERA.
  • Common Opponents: UCLA defeated FSU opponents Maryland (9-0), Florida International (11-0), Florida Atlantic (7-3), Texas Tech (3-2), Texas (5-4), Pacific (9-3), and Fresno State (5-2, 5-0 and 3-0)

Ole Miss (9-14)

  • Florida State leads the series 1-0 vs the Rebels. The last time they met was in 1998 with FSU winning 4-2.
  • The Rebels have five homeruns on the sea son and are 5-8 in neutral sites.
  • Top pitcher has a 2.33 ERA.
  • Common Opponenets: Ole Miss defeated FSU opponent Kansas 8-1.

Cal-Poly (7-5)

  • Florida State leads the series 1-0 against Cal- Poly. The last time these teams met was in 1993 with FSU winning 1-0
  • Cal-Poly is perfect in stolen bases and leads its opponents 41-39 in RBI's.
  • Top pitcher has a 1.96 ERA.
  • Common Opponents: Cal-Poly defeated FSU opponents Florida International 5-4 and lost to Iowa State 8-2.

#5 Fresno State (15-5)

  • Florida State is 1-1 vs Fresno State. These two teams met in the NFCA Classic last week end, with Fresno State winning 2-0.
  • The Bulldogs have outscored their oppo nents 62-23 and have five homeruns on the season.
  • Top pitcher has a 0.42 ERA.
  • Common Opponents: Fresno State has topped FSU opponents Kansas (10-0), Mississippi State (4-2), Texas (2-0)and Harvard (9-1) and have lost to UCLA (5-2, 5-0 and 3-0)

Illinois State (3-9)

  • Florida State leads the series 6-0. The last time they met was in 1996 with FSU winning 4-1.
  • Illinois State leads its opponents 28-25 in runs scored and have 23 RBI's on the sea son.
  • Top pitcher has a 1.21 ERA
  • Common Opponents: Illinois State dropped two to FSU opponent Texas 2-1 and 1-0.

Texas Tech (7-16)

  • This will serve as the first meeting between these two teams.
  • Texas Tech has scored 48 runs, 46 of them RBI's and has 20 stolen bases.
  • Top pitcher has a 0.99 ERA
  • Common Opponents: Texas Tech defeated FSU opponent Texas 4-0 and dropped to UCLA 3-2.

Speed on the Basepath
The Florida State Lady Seminoles go into this weekend with 46 stolen bases. That is an average of 1.93 steals a game. Leading the team with 18 steals is Rita Brooks, who averages .78 per game.

Homerun Club
Over the left, right or center field wall, the Lady Seminoles have put them out this season! Teresa Edenfield leads the team with three homers with Kelly Miller on her tail with two. Jen White-Stokes had an in the park homerun at Lady Seminole field with Kimmy Carter hitting her first as a Lady Seminole against Florida A&M. The last member of the club is junior college transfer Rita Brooks, who hit a two-run homer against Florida Atlantic last weekend to give FSU the 2-0 win. This was also her first collegiate homerun.

Inside the Park
Junior Jennifer White-Stokes hit an inside the park home run on Saturday, Feb 12 against FAMU. The ball got caught in the sun in the fifth inning and by the time it was retrieved, White-Stokes had crossed the plate safely to give the Lady Noles a 7-5 lead over FAMU in the Seminole Classic.

Records at the complex
Two records were tied or broken during the Lady Seminole Classic over the weekend. The Cal-Berkeley Bears tied the record for team RBI's with 10 and set a new records for runs by one team in a game with 14 against FAMU on Feb 12.

Extra Time
The Lady Seminoles are 2-1 in extra innings this season. Their lone loss was in eight innings against Villanova where they lost 3-2.

RBI Machine
Edenfield leads the team and the ACC with 20 RBI's on the season. She has already surpassed her total of 13 from last year and her single season record from 1998. She had seven RBI's in six games, each doubleheaders against Stetson, Bethune-Cookman and Mercer.

The Lady Seminoles are averaging 3.96 runs a game so far this season on 95 runs scored in the 24 games that they have played. On the other side of the ball, the Lady Noles have given up only 46 runs on the year, averaging 1.92 runs per game.

Twice is Nice
Sophomore Leslie Malerich won her second consecutive ACC pitcher of the week award for the week of February 21st. For the week, she compiled a 5-0 record while not allowing a run in 21 1/3 innings of work. Malerich now leads the ACC with a 10-4 record on the season with a 0.64 ERA. She has not went 28 1/3 consecutive innings before allowing a run and has 78 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings pitched.

Winning Streak
The Lady Seminoles won eight straight games before losing a close one to Villanova, 3-2 in eight innings, at the FAU Worth Tournament.

Brooks Streak Ends, still leader
Junior college transfer Rita Brooks continues to lead the starters in hitting with a .405 average. She ended her hitting streak at 10 games and has hit safely in 21 of 24 games this season.

On the Basepath
Freshman Brandi Stuart is a 15-for-16 in stealing bases this season as Felicia Williams has gone 7-9. The team leader, Rita Brooks, has 18 out of 21 attempts.

Shutting 'em out!
The Florida State pitchers have shutout nine opponents this season, including a no-hitter against Florida A&M February 9th. Leslie Malerich leads the squad with four solo and two combined shutouts.

In the ACC
When it comes to the ACC standings, FSU is written everywhere. As a team FSU holds third in batting, second pitching wise, and second in fielding. Aside from team standings FSU also shines while seven players hold standings of their own.

Welcome Back, Louie!
Coach Graf made a coaching change this year and brought back a familiar face. Assistant Coach Louie Berndt returns to FSU after coaching for six seasons at Marshall. A graduate of Western Michigan, Berndt coached the 1989 Lady Seminole pitchers and outfielders, helping the team to a Top 20 ranking and second-place finish in the Southwest Regional.

A New Face
Pitching Coach Heather Compton is one of the newest additions to FSU Softball. In her four years at UCLA, Compton was a member of the 1990 and 1992 national champion teams as well as an All-American and All-College World Series team member. Compton came to FSU after playing with the Tampa Bay Firestix of the Women's Professional Softball League.

Taking over the ACC
The Lady Seminoles are on top of the ACC. Four FSU players leads their respective catagories and the team is second in the league behind North Carolina (12-3):
