FAU Tourney Starts Friday

March 4, 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- For the second time in as many weeks, the No. 18 Florida State softball team is set to hit the road for a multi-team tournament.

After going 4-1 in five games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. last weekend, the Seminoles (15-2) will spend nearly a week in Boca Raton, Fla. participating in the Florida Atlantic University Miken Classic.

FSU will play six games in a span of five days.

Outside of a come-from-behind, walk-off homerun loss to Illinois to start play in Columbus, FSU dominated its competition at the NFCA Leadoff Classic and will be looking to duplicate that this coming week. In their four victories, the Seminoles outscored Southern Illinois, Mississippi Valley State, Hofstra and Kent State by a combined score of 31-4.

One of the primary reasons for that performance was the pitching of junior Sarah Hamilton.

The Tallahassee native allowed just three runs on three hits all weekend and struck out a combined 31 batters. Even more impressive, she pitched no-hitters against Hofstra and Kent State and was rewarded by being named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week.

On offense, FSU got tremendous production from across the lineup.

Ashley Stager, Carly Wynn, Tory Haddad and Monica Montez all homered over the course of the weekend. Haddad (nine games) and Shayla Jackson (15 games) also kept their impressive hitting streaks alive.

After their 4 p.m. game against Eastern Michigan on Friday, the 'Noles play Florida Atlantic at 6:30 p.m.. FSU then plays Connecticut and Michigan State on Saturday, Miami (Oh) on Sunday and Michigan State again on Tuesday.
