What happened last week:
FSU 4 Mercer 0: The 17th-ranked Seminole softball team (12-1) posted their eighth straight win Tuesday afternoon as they defeated the Mercer University Bears (3-4) 4-0. On an afternoon where the Noles received their 2000 ACC Championship rings, it was newcomer Jessica van der Linden who once again stole the show. The southpaw from Cerritos, CA, fresh off of her first career collegiate no-hitter, threw a two-hit shutout and extended her win streak to four and she has yet to give up a run in the 2001 season.
FSU 8 Mercer 0: The Seminole pitching staff continued their dominance Tuesday evening as they recorded their eighth shutout of the 2001 season and lowered their team ERA to 0.66 in a 8-0 win over Mercer University (3-5). Leslie Malerich gave up just two hits and struck out four batters on her way to her sixth consecutive win of the season and the No. 17 Seminoles won their ninth game in a row to improve to 13-1 on the season.
Illinois 1 FSU 0: The 16th-ranked Seminole softball team (13-2) lost just their second game of the 2001 season when they were downed 1-0 by the University of Illinois (10-4) in the opening game of the FAU/Worth Invitational. Florida State stranded five base runners and committed three errors in its first loss in the last 10 games.
FAU 2 FSU 1 (10 inn): For the first time in the 2001 season, the 16th-ranked Seminole softball team lost two games in a row as they fell to Florida Atlantic University (6-4) 2-1 in 10 innings Friday evening. Florida State (13-3) dropped its first game in the FAU/Worth Invitational earlier in the day to Illinois 1-0.
FSU 11 FAMU 0: The Florida State softball team (14-3) bounced back Saturday morning and ended its first losing streak of 2001 with a 9-0, five inning win over FAMU (3-7) in second day action at the FAU/Worth Invitational. Junior Leslie Malerich went three innings and allowed no runs and just one hit as she has now pitched 13 innings at the Worth Invitational and allowed no earned runs and struck out 14 opposing batters.
FSU 5 Maryland 3: The No. 16 Florida State softball team (15-3) improved to 2-2 in the FAU/Worth Invitational with a 5-3 win over ACC rival Maryland (4-4) in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. The Noles were led by freshman pitcher Jessica van der Linden (5-0) and Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week Bandi Stuart as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Jen White-Stokes came in and picked up her first save of the season.
FSU 2 Illinois 0: After dropping its first two games of the FAU/Worth Invitational, the 16th-ranked Florida State softball team (16-3) avenged one of its opening day losses and won its third straight game with a 2-0 win over the University of Illinois. (11-6). The win puts the Seminoles in the championship game where they will face host team FAU who defeated FSU 2-1 in 10 innings on the first day of competition.
FSU 1 FAU 0: The 16th-ranked Seminoles may have started a little slow at the FAU/Worth Invitational but they swept the field Saturday and Sunday and captured the title with a 1-0 win over FAU (9-5), previously unbeaten in the tournament, to raise their record to 17-3 on the season.
