Getting to Know: Kelly Hensley

Feb. 11, 2013

Throughout the 2013 season, each Seminole softball student-athlete who appears in the program's Q&A section will also be featured on Seminoles.com. The second student-athlete is junior first baseman Kelly Hensley

1. You've got a bright future ahead of you. What are your career aspirations following softball?

This summer I will be applying to medical school. I will apply to Florida State and hopefully get in there and spend four years there. I'm a little up in the air on what specialty I want to get into. It's one of those things you get a better understanding of when you are in medical school. I'd like to go to general surgeries, but other specialties are really interesting to me too.

2. Explain your summer trip to Peru as part of Medlife and what that did for you.

It was really eye-opening to me. I guess I always knew that people had very sub-standard healthcare in third-world countries like Peru, but just seeing it really made me understand how bad their situation was. They have national healthcare, but Lima is one of the biggest cities in the world and I think is about 75 percent of Peru's population. You have these little communities built up in the base of the mountain, and the higher up you are the poorer you are. They have these shacks made of tin high atop the mountains, they don't really have electricity and if they do they have to splice it from somebody down low. They can't get to anything from there, and you have to be at the center of Lima to get healthcare so they can't get there and can't afford it. Medlife tries to set up mobile clinics and create permanent healthcare where in each city they can come I believe once a month to treat patients, keep them on their medications and do other things as well.

3. What was it like for you to be coached by your father?

I really enjoyed being coached by my dad. He coached me for a long time so when I came to Florida State it really did feel weird when he wasn't coaching me. I think it really created a strong father-daughter bond over the years and now I see him as one of my best friends. Sometimes people don't have those types of relationships with their dads so I think it really helped us in that area.

4. How neat is it for you to see a little Niceville connection starting up at FSU?

It's really cool (having Niceville natives Stephanie Hartness and Courtney Adams on the team). I have known Stephanie for so long, we played softball together in middle school. It seems like every day something from the past comes up between her and I and we're like "Remember that time when," and it just creates all these memories.

5. What's the best thing about where you're from?

I think there are a lot of things. It's a nice small city but isn't too remote because you have bigger cities like Fort Walton and Destin nearby. The school system in Niceville is great, I think it's usually in the Top 10 in Florida. There are big malls and beaches to go to. Our beaches have the white powder sand and clear water and are beautiful.

6. Has there ever been any piece of advice someone has given you that you have always remembered?

My dad used to tell me that if what you worked for wasn't hard, then there wouldn't be much satisfaction when you've actually done the work. I've used that piece of advice a lot, especially if it's in softball or in what I am trying to accomplish in school.

7. What's the latest news with your sister Amanda? (She was in the medical services arm of the U.S. Army)

My sister just finished Physician's Assistant school in San Antonio and we actually moved her to Colorado Springs over Christmas break and spent Christmas there. It was cold! She's been getting some good experience now helping deliver babies and being in the E.R. and she's always sending me text messages about what's going on.

8. With the Grammy's wrapping up last Sunday night, who is your biggest musical interest and why?

I always listen to country so I would have to say Miranda Lambert. I like her because she is edgy and doesn't really care what others think, and you can hear that in her music.
