TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State softball team are ranked No. 12 as ESPN.com and USA Softball released their preseason Collegiate Top 25 poll for 2014. The `Noles are also ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/NFCA preseason poll.
"It's less than two weeks until opening day and we are ready to go," said head coach Lonni Alameda. "It is great to be recognized nationally in the preseason polls as a top 15 team, but our goal is to be one of the final eight squads in June battling for a national championship. We are excited to have the chance to play several ranked teams throughout the season and know that the work we have done in the offseason will prepare us for these challenges."
Florida State is the only ACC school ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll while FSU will take on three top-10 schools in 2014. The `Noles have a home and home series with No. 3 Florida, head to Tuscaloosa for a tournament at No. 6 Alabama and open the season at a neutral site tournament in New Mexico against No. 9 Nebraska on Feb. 7.
The Seminoles return 14 letterwinners and eight starters from a 2013 squad that advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals a year ago. 2013 NFCA Third Team All-American Lacey Waldrop is back in the circle after the junior amassed a 24-10 record with a 1.53 ERA last season. Offensively, Florida State brings back players that hit 56 of last year's school-record 60 home runs, led by senior Courtney Senas' 14 home runs which tied a single-season school record.
Eight other opponents on the 2014 schedule, including ACC foes NC State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Syracuse are receiving votes in this year's preseason poll.
