TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State softball team gave Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf an end of the year treat tonight as they won #1,000 and #1,001 of her career with 2-1 and 5-0 wins over South Florida at the Seminole Softball Complex. Dr. Graf becomes the first coach in Division I history to win 1,000 Division I games and the first to win 1,000 at a single university. All of these games include slow and fast pitch.
"It's overwhelming, winning 1,000 games," Graf said. "You know it's something special but you still want to focus on the game at hand. It brought back a lot of memories, but I was real proud of how these girls played tonight. It was players and coaches like I have right now that made this possible.
"Everything was perfect. The team got the job done and these were big wins for us."
Danielle Cox started the game for the Lady Seminoles as she got on base on an error and then stole second and third, breaking the single season record for stolen bases with #70. Cox also leads the Atlantic Coast Conference and the country in stolen bases. Cox needs nine more stolen bases to break the NCAA record (80).
"It was one of my goals this season, to break the stolen base record," Cox said. "It was really exciting to be able to acheive that, especially in my final regular season game and in Coach Graf's 1,000 win. That is something I will remember for the rest of my life."
Cox scored the first run of the game with Christy Cerecedes right behind her off a Bulls error to take the 2-0 lead. The Bulls answered in the fourth inning with a homerun from Nora Widekis, her first, but the Lady Seminoles would hold on to win 2-1. Cox, Jesse McGregor, Kimmy Carter and Dana bailey were all 1-3 from the plate and Cerecedes was perfect with a stolen base. Stacy Venable took the complete game and win, improving to 12-1, giving up two runs and four hits and striking out four batters.
Teresa Edenfield started the scoring in game two as she drove in Cox and McGregor. Cox then broke the hits record in the second inning with a single to the shortstop, giving her 93 hits on the season. Bailey and Tami Post sored on errors in the fourth inning with McGregor scoring off a wild pitch. South Florida scored a run in the sixth inning off a passed ball but the Lady Seminoles held on and won 5-1. Cox went 1-2 with two stolen bases as Jen White and Bailey were also 1-2. White took the win on the pitching end, giving up two hits and one run and striking out seven batters.
"We played awesome," Graf said. "We hit well, the defense played well and the pitching was great. I asked them where this team had been for two months.
"It was just a neat night. We played really well and I was really proud of Danielle for setting those records."
Florida State finishes the regular season with a 37-25-1 record and went 6-2 in conference play as well as going 10-2 in the Southern Atlantic Alliance (SAA). The Lady Seminoles are tied in the SAA with Maryland at 10-2 and are looking for their 13th invitation to the NCAA regionals.
"We still have a shot, especially with some of the other teams falling a bit," Graf said. "We have to keep working hard, win the ACC tournament, and we'll see what happens."
FSU will host the ACC Tournament beginning on May 14th and will take on North Carolina in the first round on Friday, May 14th at 5:00pm. For ticket information, call 850-644-1830.
