Seminole Softball Sweeps UNC-Charlotte

May 4, 1999

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After a 16-day layoff, the Florida State softball team sprung back into action in dominating fashion with a 10-1 and 12-5 sweep of the UNC-Charlotte 49ers this afternoon. With the victories, the Seminoles improve to 35-25-1 on the season while Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf moves to just one away from career win #1000. UNCC falls to 21-36 overall.

The Seminoles used big innings to break things open in each game. After trailing 1-0 after one inning in game one, FSU's Teresa Edenfield, who went 2-for-3 and had two RBI in the first game, led off the second inning with a double which was the first of four Seminoles hits in the inning. Senior Tami Post also doubled in the inning as two runs scored. The score was locked at 2-1 until the FSU fourth when the Tribe scored five runs off of four hits. Freshman Kimmy Carter's triple scored three while sophomore Christy Cerecedes and Edenfield each ripped RBI doubles. FSU scored three more runs in the 6th inning as the game was called due to the 8-run rule. Florida State outhit the 49ers 13-3 as senior Stacy Venable improved her record to 11-1 on the season.

The third inning was a key factor in the Seminoles' success in game two as FSU scored eight runs off of seven hits while UNCC recorded five errors. FSU led 2-1 after two innings as Carter led off the top of the third with a triple. In fact, FSUs first three hits of the inning were for extra bases as Edenfield and Corrie Williams each doubled. Carter would later bat a second time and drove in two runs with a single. The Tribe would score just two more runs the rest of the game but again ripped 13 hits in the victory. Sophomore Jen White earned the victory and improved to 14-16 on the season.

"It was good to see us go out and get after the ball like we did today," Graf said. "It can be hard to get back into action after such a long break, but I thought the players came out focused and ready to play. These were big wins for us as we will end the regular season at home this week against South Florida and then host the ACC Tournament next week."

Senior Danielle Cox went 4-for-8, including one triple, with a run and an RBI and recorded two steals on the day. With 68 steals on the year, she is just two swipes away from setting a new FSU single-season record for steals. With 91 hits, she is just two hits shy of setting a new FSU single-season record for hits. Carter ended the day with a team-high five RBI, also going 4-for-8, including two triples, and three runs scored. Edenfield went 3-for-7, all doubles, and drove in three runs.

Graf will have a shot at win #1000 when Florida State ends the regular season on Thursday, May 6th, with a doubleheader vs. in-state rival South Florida at 5:30 p.m. at the FSU Softball Complex.
