TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State softball team split a double-header with the Massachusetts Minutewomen, dropping the first game 1-2 but rebounding and winning the second 6-0 at the Seminole Softball Complex tonight. The Lady Seminoles improve to 17-16-1 as the Minutewomen go to 13-6.
The Lady Seminoles took an early lead in the first game when Tami Post hit a single to drive in Christy Cerecedes but the Minutewomen came on in the 5th inning, scoring a run off a sacrifice fly by Mandy Galas. Umass scored the go ahead run in the 7th inning. Jen White pitched a complete game, striking out six batters and giving up two earned runs.
"With the score 1-1, I thought Danielle Cox beat out the ground ball throw to first," Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. "We dont know what would have happened then. It would have been a good opportunity against a top pitcher like Henderson."
FSU took the lead in the second game when Corrie Williams drove in Christy Cerecedes off a single to right field. Kelly Miller added two RBIs as did Williams and Tami Post had her second of the night. Cerecedes also added a stolen base and Stacy Venable improved her pitching record to 5-0. Leslie Malerich had the save for the Lady Seminoles.
"I was pleased with the fact that we scored more against them than Fresno State did," Graf said. "We did a good job coming back and playing as a team."
The Lady Seminoles continue action on Thursday as they host ACC opponent Virginia in a double-header beginning at 6:00pm. This game will be televised on Sunshine.
