March 13, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Lady Seminole softball team went 2-0 today to advance to the semi-finals of the Gold division at the FSU Invitational. FSU took the win over Furman 2-0 to advance to the Gold Division and had a 2-0 win over ACC opponent Maryland, setting up a match-up with Central Michigan in the semi-finals of the Gold Division.

"We've started playing better as a team and come together more and more," Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. "We have a tough match-up with Central Michigan tomorrow and will need to continue playing like we did tonight to advance to the championship tomorrow."

Stacy Venable struck out five batters in four innings as Kimmy Carter hit two doubles and had an RBI in the first game to give the Seminoles the 2-0 win over Furman this afternoon. Tami Post had a sacrifice bunt in the second inning to score the Lady Seminoles first run as Danielle Cox added two stolen bases and went 2-3 from the plate.

The Lady Seminoles remained scoreless until the sixth inning against Maryland when Christy Cerecedes, who was 2-3 from the plate, hit a two run triple, driving in Jen White and Felicia Williams, giving the Lady Seminoles the lead and wining runs. White also pitched eight strikeouts and gave up only four hits.

"Jen (White) threw an excellent game tonight," Graf said. "She would get ahead in the count and make them play catch-up. Christy (Cerecedes) really rebounded well form the earlier game. She's the type of player you can count on in a tense situation."

The Lady Seminoles will play Central Michigan in the fist semi-final game in the Gold Division on Sunday at 10:00am at the Seminole Softball Complex followed by the other semi-final match-up between Fresno State and Umass at Noon.

A QUICK NOTE: UMass pitcher Danielle Henderson became the 7th pitcher in NCAA softball history to pitch 1,000 strikeouts as she hit the mark in their win over Western Illinois. Henderson ended the night with 1,002 strike outs.
