TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State Seminoles earned a sweep over the Campbell Fighting Camels this evening in softball action at the FSU Softball Complex. FSU improves to 9-9-1 on the season with the 5-0 and 2-0 victories while Campbell drops to 1-11 on the season.
Sophomore Jennifer White went the distance in game one, earning her first shutout of the season. She allowed just five hits, struck out seven and walked just one in facing 28 batters. Sophomore Christy Cerecedes' double in the first inning got the scoring started for the Tribe as the hit drove in Dana Bailey and Andi Lyons. Junior Becky Wallace had two doubles in the game and also drove in two runs.
Senior pitcher Stacy Venable made her first start of the season in the second game and earned the victory. Coming off of off-season shoulder surgery, Venable had seen action in relief only until tonight. Venable went 4 2/3 innings and allowed four hits, struck out five and walked four players. Freshman Leslie Malerich came in the game in relief and earned the save. Offensively for the Seminoles, Kelly Miller, who played first base, went 2-for-3 and drove in FSU's first run in the first inning. Bailey scored FSU's second run in the third inning when Wallace grounded out into a double play. Freshman right fielder Dana Vickery also had two hits in the game.
"These were big wins for us," FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. "This team was not ranked and we needed to beat them because we will be playing ranked teams this weekend at the South Florida tournament. I thought we showed a lot of heart and didn't let up after a long weekend of competition."
Florida State will head to Tampa to participate in the Speedline Invitational, a 24-team tournament hosted by South Florida. The tournament begins on Thursday, March 4th. FSU will face Mississippi State, Hofsta, Michigan, Florida Atlantic and Georgia before bracket play begins on Saturday.
