AUSTIN, Texas - Florida State softball opened up the 2009 campaign with a big 6-0 win against Iowa on Friday afternoon at McCombs Field for day one of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational.
Veteran pitcher Terese Gober struck out nine batters and allowed just one hit against the Hawkeyes. Fellow junior Monica Montez led the Noles with three hits while redshirt senior Jessica Gilmore also had a multi-hit game with two.
The Seminoles put down nine hits with four RBI and only three batters struck out against the Iowa team that received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 preseason poll.
The win propels Florida State's all-time record to 27-4 in season openers with the series record against Iowa advancing to 6-3 with FSU holding the advantage.
The Noles will face tournament host Texas at 6:00 p.m. EST to finish out their first day of competition.
