2005 Season Highlights:
Named Second-Team All-ACC...Member of the FSU Invitational All-Tournament team after
hitting .583 for the five games...Started 59 of 60 games as a rookie, making 42 starts at catcher
with 17 more as the designated player...Ranked in the top five on the team in nine different offensive
categories, including second in average (.258), slugging percentage
(.421), on-base percentage (.342), home runs (6) and
RBI (24)...Tops among all freshmen in those categories as well as hits
(41), doubles (8) and walks (21)...Led the team during ACC competition with a .500 slugging
percentage, three home runs, seven RBIs and nine walks...Fourth on the team with nine multi-hit games...Threw out a team-high 18 would-be base stealers...Had a six-game hitting streak during the season and starts
2006 with a two-game streak.
2005 NCAA Tournament Highlights:
Started all four games at catcher during the Auburn Regional...Picked up a trio of hits, including a double.
2005 Game Highlights:
Scored a run and drove in one during her first collegiate game
at Florida A&M (2/9)...Notched her first hit in a 1-for-3 performance against Nicholls
State (2/11)...Ripped her first extra-base hit the next day by picking up a
double against the Colonels...Drove in a career-high four runs on a grand slam -- her first
FSU home run -- versus Lehigh (2/25) at the NFCA Lead
off Classic...That day she also picked up her first multi-hit game with a
pair of singles against Michigan State...Drove in three runs, including the game winner, during a 2-
for-3 performance at NC State (3/7)...Knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
inning with a double to beat Iowa State (3/11)...Collected a pair of doubles versus Radford (3/12)...Picked up three free passes during the opening game of a
doubleheader with Virginia Tech (4/2)...Pushed the winning run across against Maryland (4/17) with
a sacrifice fly...Established a new career high with three hits at BYU (5/6).
High School: Wood was a three-time GACA All-State selection at Parkview High School in Georgia...The catcher, who completed her high school career in the fall of 2003, hit .435, slugged .710 and posted an on base percentage of .728 as a senior...In 125 at bats she was walked an astounding 54 times and she also had 20 RBIs and four homeruns...Defensively, she threw out 11 of 14 would-be base stealers...The three-time Gwinnett All-County first team selection has been named Gwinnett Player of the Month twice in the last two years and she was named a GACA North All-Star selection as a senior...This past season she was honored with Parkview's Offensive Award...She has traveled with Georgia Elite 18 & Under Gold and Atlanta Vipers Gold premier fast pitch softball teams...In the summer of 2004, she paired up with Seminole teammate Whitney Buckmon with Georgia Elite Gold...They placed fifth at the ASA Nationals in 2004...As a member of the Atlanta Vipers Gold in 2003, Wood had a huge summer at the plate...In 248 at bats, she hit .345, slugged .402, smashed 19 doubles and nine homeruns while driving in 56 runs...She was named to the ISF Canada Cup All-Star team as a catcher after her team placed fourth overall and she was also selected a second team ASA Gold Nationals All-American following the Vipers' fifth place finish.
Personal: Melissa Wood was born on Dec. 19...Also was a four-year letterwinner in Track & Field during high school...Earned Field Event MVP honors for three years where she also was named to the Gwinnett All-County Team each year....Garnered the 2004 Outstanding Math Student Award at Parkview HS...Named Who's Who Among American High School Students...A Future Georgia Educators (FGE) member...Musically talented...Earned three varsity letters in Orchestra...Earned the 2003 Outstanding Musician Award...Plans to major in primary educations at FSU to become an elementary art teacher.
