Game Notes - NCAA Tournament Second Round Texas Tech

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State Women's Soccer team took a step closer to their goal of a second consecutive College Cup appearance last week with a 6-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That mission continues this Friday at 7:00 p.m. as FSU hosts Texas Tech in a second round match-up inside the friendly confines of the Seminole Soccer Complex.

The match featuring the Seminoles and Red Raiders is the second of two second round matches being played in Tallahassee this weekend as Texas A&M and Oakland square-off in the first match at 4:30 p.m.

The winners of Friday's matches will face-off in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. inside the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Three of the four schools competing in Tallahassee this weekend earned an at-large bid into the tournament, while Oakland is the lone school to win its conference championship as the Golden Grizzlies defeated IPFW 2-0 in the Summit League championship game.

Last week, Texas A&M defeated Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, in College Station; Texas Tech defeated North Texas, 2-0, in Lubbock; and Oakland defeated fourth-seeded Ohio State in Columbus, 3-1 in penalty kicks, after both teams played to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action.

Tickets for the tournament are currently on sale and can be purchased over the phone at 888-FSU-NOLE, in person at the Seminole Ticket Office located in side C of the University Center and online at Seminoles.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the Seminole Soccer Complex beginning at 3:30 p.m., on Friday, November 16.

Florida State returns to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th year in a row. Not too bad for a program that has been in existence for 18 seasons. The Seminoles are just one of 10 schools out of 323 playing Division I soccer that have been to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Of those 10 schools, four are from the ACC (Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest).

FSU and Texas Tech will square-off for the first time on Friday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The match marks the fifth first-time opponent Florida State will face this season as the Seminoles are 4-0-0 with wins over Minnesota, College of Charleston, Cal State Fullerton and Jackson State. Florida State has fared well when facing a team for the first time posting an all-time record of 55-28-4.

Texas Tech marks the fifth Big 12 opponent the Seminoles have faced all-time and third in the NCAA Tournament. FSU is 4-1-0 all-time against current members of the Big 12 Conference collecting wins over Iowa State, Kansas, Texas and West Virginia. The wins over the Longhorns and the Mountaineers both came in the NCAA Tournament. The last postseason game against a current member of the Big 12 came in 2007 when Florida State defeated Texas 4-0 in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles improved to 24-1-0 at home in the NCAA Tournament following their victory over the Devilettes in the first round and are now outscoring the opposition 72-13 on their home turf. FSU had won 18 straight NCAA Tournament games inside the Seminole Soccer Complex before suffering its first home loss in the Elite Eight back in 2009. Florida State is 11-0-0 at home in 2012 and carries a 15-game home win streak into Friday's match - a streak that dates back to 2011.

Florida State sits at 35-11-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, good for a .745 winning percentage. It is tied for the third-best winning percentage among teams that have played 10 or more games. FSU's 35 wins are the eighth most in NCAA history.

For the eighth straight season and ninth time overall, Florida State received a national seed in the NCAA Tournament. After claiming the ACC regular season championship in 2012 and advancing to the semifinals of the league tournament, the Seminoles were recognized as one of four No. 1 national seeds for the second year in a row and third time overall (2009, 2011 & 2012). The Seminoles have earned a national seed nine times in 13 all-time postseason appearances.
