TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State junior midfielder Marta Bakowska-Mathews has been named the ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league office. It is her first player of the week honor of her career, and the final weekly honor awarded for the 2013 season.
Bakowska-Mathews scored both goals in Florida State's come from behind 2-1 double-overtime win over No. 19/10 Notre Dame in both teams' regular-season finale. The win gave the Seminoles the No. 2 seed in the ACC Women's Soccer Championship, which got under way this past Sunday.
With the Seminoles trailing 1-0, Bakowska-Mathews scored the game-tying goal with 2:35 left in regulation, when she sent her bending shot into the upper right corner from just inside the 18-yard box to force overtime. The Herne Bay, Kent, England, native came through with the game's golden goal in the 105th minute, as she finished a perfectly timed run with a diving header off Megan Campbell's cross from the left side of the pitch. For the season, Bakowska-Mathews has registered six goals, including three game winners.
The win over the Irish also kept Florida State's home unbeaten streak intact, while pushing it to 31 straight games (30-0-1), the longest active streak in the nation.
Bakowska-Mathews and the Seminoles are back in action this weekend as they take on North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Women's Soccer Championship on Friday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. in Cary, N.C.
