Former Seminole Trotter Selected In Women's Professional Soccer Draft

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Former Florida State standout India Trotter was selected by St. Louis in the Women's Professional Soccer General Draft on October 6. Trotter, who played at Florida State from 2003-06, was the first player picked by St. Louis in Monday's draft (Second round, 14th overall pick).
The Women's Professional Soccer League will kick off its inaugural season in April of 2009 representing the highest level of women's professional soccer in North America. Formed in September 2007 as the result of the efforts of the Women's Soccer Initiative, Inc., WPS consists of seven teams across the country located in the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis and Washington D.C.
St. Louis CEO Jeff Cooper says, "Once again, we feel great about the results of the draft. We were able to get three players who have been featured on the U.S. Women's National Team and another who is a star for the U-23 team. We have a fantastic mix of speed, size and skill and all of them are world-class players. Watching this team will be a lot of fun."
Earlier this month, St. Louis acquired the negotiating rights to Eniola Aluko and Ingvild Stensland in the WPS post-draft discovery process and prior to that St. Louis selected Daniela (Brazil), Renata Costa (Brazil), Lotta Schelin (Sweden), and Melissa Tancredi (Canada) in the leagues International Draft. These players will join U.S. Women's National Team members Lori Chalupny, Tina Ellertson, and Hope Solo in the upcoming season.
Trotter played a major role in the success of the Seminole soccer program during her four seasons in Tallahassee leading Florida State to College Cup appearances in 2003, 2005 and 2006. She finished her Seminole career with a school record 97 appearances and made 95 starts in her four seasons. Trotter ranks seventh all-time in school history with 66 points (24 goals, 18 assists), while sitting in a tie for fifth place with eight career game-winning goals.
"India is a fantastic talent," explained Florida State head coach Mark Krikorian. "I'm sure that when she makes her debut in the Women's Professional Soccer League that she will make an immediate impact. She will do a very good job of building that franchise."
"It's nice," added Krikorian on having India represent Florida State University in the WPS. "Obviously, the goal of all these young players now is to develop so that when the time comes and they graduate, they will have a place to go on and play. With India being the first one (from FSU), it is certainly nice and we are happy for her, but it is also nice for our program."
On the international level, the Plantation, Fla., native made her first trip with the full Women's U.S. National Team to the 2006 Four Nations Tournament in China, earning her first cap in a game against Norway. Trotter also played with the U.S. U-19 squad in 2003 and 2004.

NOTE: Each of the seven teams had four picks. The order was established based on a lottery done at the Board of Governors meeting on September 15, 2008 prior to the U.S. National Team allocation on September 17. The order was 1-7, 7-1, 1-7, 7-1. The WPS General Draft was open to both domestic and international players.
